Yep,
Kinda happened by accident !!
I had been looking for somewhere for my main business to operate out of with a view that we could do a bit more domestic work considering I spend a grand a year on yellow pages and usually just say no to domestic as it always seemed to come when we were busy with our core work and clients.
Then spraying the orange ourselves meant that the landlord was saying he could do a good deal if I took that unit, and frankly it seemed like a good option as I wouldnt have to buy a booth or compressor and it right next to GBH so they can keep an eye out for me as I have trust issues with people !!
Its ironic that 6 weeks ago I had no idea that I would be doing this despite always having been around painters and loving the ability of colour to completely change how a car looks. I wanted to get some pointers off Carl as Im sure he would have helped me with things like insurers, and other advice as we go back a long way but he keeps changing/losing mobiles so havent been able to tell him !! I think it will be good given that both Stuart and I are car nuts, know loads of people and hopefully have a reasonable idea of how to keep a business like that ticking over without any external issues.
As for everyones positive comments - thank you very much, Im really stoked to get that kind of support, yes we will be just beginning as a business but I already have two very experienced people sorted to actually do the work and of course we will be able to do anything, repairs, custom stuff an so on, but I dont want any of the "project cars" to be hanging around for 6 months or anything like that, I'd rather turn our focus on them properly and get them done and returned to the owners so that they can enjy the cars and not worry that they aren't progressing as fast as they would prefer.
I think we will run a booking system that will allow us a long term car for say 4-8 weeks turn around say a custom car with a fair bit of chopping and changing, a mid termer for 2-4 weeks work such as a full kit or colour change, these will have thier own bays and we will know a projected finish time so that we can organise for the next jobs to go in those bays. Then we will have a short term area for jobs that are anything from a scrape on a bumper that just needs blowing in and be in and out in a couple of days up to say a car thats had a bike go in its door and needs a new door, and a side repainting that will take a week. This should help us manage the work better and give the customers a sense of time that is realistic and informaed rather than the usual "few days mate" approach that often ends up in confusion and frustration. We'll also perhaps have a clean room for detail work, or perhaps refitting of interior parts, which would be kept in a clean set of racks rather than dumped in a corner which is often the case.
Its just a clean, proper business like approach which should hopefully inspire confidence to customers and also help deliver a better result in the long run. Besides, who likes working or visiting a sh!tpit to see where hundreds or thousands of pounds of their money is going ???
Cor blimey - check me out on my newly sprayed soapbox !!
Should be open for business by mid to end of July if that helps anyone interested in us helping them.
And who knows, we may eventually need a trainee to help prep cars once we get busier !!!
