Just had the claims dept on the phone and was given a choice so I expressed a preference for my local Scoob garage. So I have to get said garage to quote and then the ins company's engineer has to agree costs with them, apparently.
May have to use RAC to get to the garage, but otherwise looking straightforward so far.

Crashed on way home tonight
Gerry asked what 4.5k (insurance quote) of damage looked like. Here it is:

With standard wheels swapped on it drives ok, to my surprise. Driver's front wheels is now about 1cm further back than the passenger side, and steering wheel is rotated about 30deg to the left.
You can see how the skidmarks veer left at the point of impact, and the marks on the 1m-high verge made by all 4 wheels.

Don't get much for 4.5K then. Bloody shame as it was a really nice car.
As we're in Members Only, Was the ABS disabled to leave those marks?
If they do let you buy the car back, I know a good man in MK.

Thats not bad, either that will fill or you can buy the timwork that sits over the a-pillar. From those pics I would reckon that dependant on how bad the chassis leg a nd inner wing are thats under 2k's worth of damage if you don't go through the insurance and get a deal with a bodyshop as they all charge higher labour rates and replace everything brand new that they have to remove.IWANT1 wrote:Cant be good that the A piler got a touch.

Yup. And, 406 silver is a popular colour so there's a chance of picking up some parts secondhand from the likes of ESB.
ABS unit is in that corner, but I wouldn't mind converting it to non-ABS. [Gerry - yes indeed, I was running it with the fuse pulled at the time. Wasn't aware of having locked up at the time, and it was following the straight path I'd intended, away from the other car towards the bank]
The uncertainty of the extent of the chassis/suspension damage makes me wary though. Not sure I'd be able to get a proper diagnosis before having to make a decision. Could probably drive it somewhere local though.

I have a steel wishbone, if you want to change that before driving it anywhere. You may be lucky and find that's a lot of the misalignment problem. Apparently the alloy ones bend quite easily.
As for 1Ks worth of paint. The guy who did mine repaired the bonnet, and rear quarter panel, welded up all the skirt fixing holes in the sills, plastic welded the UK washer holes in the front bumper and the no. plate screw holes, straightened a dent in the rear bumper and resprayed the car to a very good standard for
