Opel Manta Project update 30/05/2009
Strobe should tell you a lot as to the state of the dizzy. i.e. how wide the light band is. It wants to be narrow, which shows it's firing at the same point each time, a wide band would indicate wear in the spindle bushes. You should also see the mechanical and vacuum advance operate as the revs increase.
Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or hump it, piss on it and walk away!
Hi Suz, if you are looking for anymore carb people John Eales might be worth a try. My brother used him to rebuid all the carbs on his kit car, he did a quality job

Just to update not really to much further forward but hopefully in couple of weeks will be taking the car to someone who knows what they're doing.
Have a guy just up the road who has previously had a vauxhall thunder Saloon with a manta 400 engine running twin 48's.
So long as all goes to plan he will be looking at he timing getting this set and checking jetting on the carbs, and probably discovering more issues along the way!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Also going to check the distributor to make sure it is one from a carbed manta not the injection so can make sure the vacuum advance working correctly.
Have got as far as I can with the running problems now needs to be fine tuned by someone who knows and can explain what is wrong.
Will let you all know soon

Right finally an update, managed to get wedding plans to a place where I can pay my baby (the car not Jay) some attention again (well for couple of hours anyway!!!!)
Managed to fit the new pressure sensor that I bought for it and have got 3bar of pressure on tickover so something else I don't need to worry about. :-D
Also decided to bit the bullet and remove the ECU and luckily it hasn't affected anything and also removed the associated wiring loom so the engine bay is a bit tidier.
Also removed the drivers seat and started a bit of rust excavation in drivers footwell, will try to post up couple of pics later.
Well after removing the lumps of expanding foam that filled part of the chassis rail and jacking point it isn't as bad as I thought. There is still quite a lot of solid metal and looks as if have got to it just in time to not need to replace the inner sills
However until she is stripped down and acid dipped not going to get my hopes up too much.

I'd be more inclined to have it shot blasted using chilled iron or aluminium oxide.
That way you get rid of all the rust, paint and everything else you don't want, right down to the metal, and you get and a nicely keyed surface that will take filler and primers really well.
Just my tuppence worth

Buggers cancelled my op just a couple of days before it was due. Inconsiderate barstewards!!

Waiting now for another execution date!!:headhack:

Basically take one very rusty manta and drop it into a vat of acid which eats away all the paint etc and hope something more than the size of a 5p comes out!!!!stuart wrote:Acid dipped? Care to elaborate?
Not really see link below for more info.

Did look at shot blasting but is not so good for removing the tiny pieces of rust that are in the shell but barely visable and ideally would need a minor weld fill, and will inevitably a year down the line flare up and result in having to sand weld and respray again.
Think there is someone in Taverham but not got number yet.

Actually that was an interesting website and the processes look very effective. I like the fact they offer primer services as well and pretty useful if the car bodywork is all done. They clearly know what they are doing but it looks bloody expensive.
Would be interested to know what they charge. Good luck on that one :thumb:
