towing with a dolly
towing with a dolly
i think i know the answer but how does the law stand when towing using a solid dolly (a solid one that needs nobody in the towed car) does the car have to be fully legal as the wheels are on the road ? also same question when the front wheels are off the ground . i think the towed car has to be legal ie: taxed etc.. but thought it worth an ask as really you could say its a trailer as there is nobody travelling in the car
Small one's are more juicy
As i understand it if two wheels are off the ground it doesnt have to be MOT etc
But if you tow it on its wheels you have to be fully road leagal
I am sure some one will know for sure tho!
I used to move VW Bugs on a fixed dolly lots some where projects so could be far from road ready.
One thing i always had was a set of pucker tyres on the towed car and made sure the light board was spot on less chance of getting pulled!

sounds about right , im thinking about buying a pug 205gti and dont want it road legal as it will be a waste of money and also like the thought of 'if i break it i can tow it home' a dolly is a damn site easier to keep at home than a trailer
maybe pc185 could shed some light on the rules of towing when he's back from the ring

this was to tow a pug 205 gti i was offered a few months ago, it was purely for a track car so did not want it road legal just a way of getting it to tracks
problem was solved as i did not buy the car
at the time my impreza engine was in a bad way so looking for something cheap to abuse

Hi Folks!
Another thing to remember is , that as the law stands, most cars being towed would fall fowl of it, because they are unbraked. I use a fixed A frame on an almost daily basis, and deal alot with VOSA. it was only on friday last week that i was given a tip off by one of the inspectors, that the mobile units are activley targeting A-frame/dolly users on the road at the mo!
Something to bear in mind for anyone else thinking of using one?
