996 tt dyno , no go

Post by luddy007 »

hi everybody, I have a problem that I thought might be good to put on the forum, as its something that someone else might have come up against. I took my 911 996 turbo for a dyno tune at clive atthowes engine tuning and sadly my car just wouldnt have it. It would rev up to around 3000rpm and then as soon as the 4x4 system started to shift the power to the front wheels because of the dyno it would just cut the power and not let clive rev the car any more. clive contacted the dyno manufacturer to query this and they said to remove the transfer prop shaft linking the front wheels. This is not something I really want to do and was wondering if anybody has had a similar experience with this car on a dyno and whether there is something more simple that can be done to the car to solve this issue.

Try this place:
Rennsport Technologies, Unit 23/Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone, Towcester, NN12 8TL, Telephone: 01327 855820

I think the guy's name is Chris. It's, what was, WRC Developements. They do a lot of work on Porches and have a DD rolling road set up.

APT in Norwich will be able to sort it out I am sure.

Give Gary a pm on here or call him. http://www.ap-tuning.co.uk

The 4x4 system and the way it shuffles power around is not unlike a GTR, something Hayward-san has a fair bit of experience with. As Dunk suggests may be drop in or call and see how it goes. I'd be interested in the outcome.

this might help...some cars have a clever safety system that wont let them be testest on a dyno.. we recently chiped an E46 BMW M3, and when running it up on the dyno it hit 5.5k then hit rev limit...even though the car peaks at around 7k..on the road it was fine but not on the dyno..it went into a sort of dyno mode, i dont know if some porsche's have a similar system??

also another contact is Mike at M.sport, they are a porsche specialist in norwich

This also happened to a guy I know running his 997 turbo at Engine Advantages in Essex....don't think they were able to get round it either.....I think the only solution is to give your car to me 'Please' :D and I wont bother with the dyno

Without wishing to be argumentative Rob, why would an ECU safety mode inhibit being used on a dyno?

dont really know stuart, we thought the same whilst testing the E46, however superchip confirmed it. when the customer took it on the road it revved all the way round to 7k?!?

the electronic safety sensors and traction controls on the car were causing the problem...i.e the front wheels were stationary and back wheels were spinning..ecu cut power/rev range to avoid damage being cause to the car

There's a safety system built into most modern cars that stop the engine revving up unless the wheel rotation matches (using ABS sensors I think).

Richards C4s did the same at Emeralds a few years ago as did my Blue M3, I have since had my CSL remaped and dynode with no problems.

There is usually a bypass sequence, this is the E46 M3s (pinched from another fourum).

How to DYNO E46 M3:

1- Be sure M3 is strapped down safely.

2- Turn on the ignition and crank the engine.

3- Turn off DSC button.

4- Rev the engine past 6000 rpm. DO NOT exceed 6500 rpm.

5- Once the engine speed is between 6000 rpm and 6500 rpm TURN OFF
IGNITION.

6- Let the engine speed drop to zero RPM and also let the rear wheels come to a still stand.

7- Put the gear into neutral (both the SMG and 6M)

8- Turn ignition key to position 2 where you will see the engine oil and battery lights on the tacho.

9- Press the DSC button for 30 seconds.

10- Crank the engine and PUSH the SPORT BUTTON.

E46 M3 is now ready to be dynoed.
