Manta bonfire iminent!!!!!!!

Post by Suz »

As soon as ran the car the sensor appears to have stopped working so still no idea on oil pressure!!
Mind you this small concerned in grand scheme of things.
Had her running sunday and took her out seemed so much better couldn't believe it however as soon as she got hot she was as lumpy as before. seems something is getting hot and causing a large misfire.
Had another look at cam timing and this is spot on, also took dizzy off today and made sure ignition timing is set properly.
Rechecked compression and got 100 - 110 on 1 & 2 and 130 on both 3 & 4 this is a major improvement from previous checks so thought must have done something right.
As such a large diff between front and back removed rockers and checked compression again to try to see if valves or lifters might be a prob. (lifters are definately a problem as most are seized with no up and down movement at all).
However when did compression check without rockers on am now getting 130ish on 1 and 20-30 on the rest (although number three did read 100 ish at one point) this makes no sense at all to me, seems such a large change.
Was expecting either around the 130 indicating the lifters were the prob or no change indicating valves. This now has me baffled.
Any advice please

Thanks Eddy for your advice today.
Eddy kindly pointed out that if the valves closed then there will be no air getting into the cylinder hence no compression. simple when you know how :D

Well heres the latest.

After removing all the lifters, dismantling, cleaning and reassembling, put them back into the engine reset the rockers last night, then reset the ignition timing (by ear but should be done properly next week) had to stop as neighbours not too keen on hearing the sound of a carbed Manta late at night :D Don't see why not, I could listen to it all day and all night :D
Tonight went out and checked the compression again and..................................................................

150 psi on all cylinders :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: am I pleased or what, finally I have an engine I know is sound.

Took her out for a good run and still got a flat spot but this is almost certainly down to fuelling and ignition timing as only at low revs and as you accelerate (overfuelling on number 1 choke, but as soon number 2 kicks in oh yeah :D :D ).
Also wondering if the pressure regulator is doing the job or set correctly, it has numbers 1-5 with half settings really helpful..not!!!!)
I know and intend to borrow/steal a nice Sard adjustable FPR, from a skyline that is not in use, you never know he might not notice me swap it with the Aldi equivilent mine is using!!!!! :thumb:

However all that i (well probably with Gary's help  ) can sort now I have a fully working engine with good compression, finally feel like the last month of cold evenings spent lying under the car coated in oil and antifreeze has all been worthwhile, and I've only broken one nail!!!!! :D

Have a hunch that when she is running right she is going to fly as even in the state she is in she pulls like a train. :grin :grin I'm thinking that might even get some really "bigpower" of 160hp :-D

I can now say I am officially in love!!!

Superb news !

Are you sure the pressure regulator is not marked as 1-5 bar pressure ?

Well she finally made it to a Bigpower meet.

Not quite sure how she made it home mind you, (cut out once and kangerooed the rest of the way) she is now having real issues (was worse than on way home with blown head gasket!!)

As advised going back to beginning and going to have to sort it all out one thing at a time.

1) Set static timing properly (using strobe)
2) Replace carb mountings
3) Refurb carbs
4) Make sure carbs jetted correctly
5) ?????????????????

Did the car park timing setup not help then lol
Come round tomorrow and borrow the strobe and get that variable out of the way then sort the carbs.
