trackday prep vs MOTs

Post by Tommy »

Hi. Since work is going to start soon on the newly acquired 328i (and since this is my/our first more dedicated track toy) I thought I better check what needs to remain/what can't be modified if I am to keep it road legal i.e. have an MOT?

For example, will stripping out the interior and fitting a roll cage, buckets and harnesses make it illegal? I know that you need a horn so a button will be saved for that! All exterior lights and indicators will stay as will windscreen wipers. Is there anything we need to be aware of? Cheers

We have retained our front seat belts for the mot. If you fit FIA approved harnesses i.e aircraft style buckle i am sure that these are not mot friendly. If you fit a cage it will need to have removable door bars. Stripping the interior is ok.

I am sure that someone in the know will be along soon to put me right

Thanks Pablo. Just to clarify, having FIA approved buckle harnesses but whilst retaining original seatbelts will get you through?

rally car has no std seat belts at all, and never had an issue across 3x different MOT garages..............only provision is that if fitted must work and available for any seat needing them

as for bolt out door bars, why?? if its got a cage fitted then no difference if its bolted or welded style

The only time ive had problems with Harnesess is at SVA time never had a problem during mot.

The AX came with mot as there isnt much left of that.

No interrior, heater, speedo, gauges

It has door bars and the basics fog light/hazard switch that lights up but not much else.

I was told by a mot tester that door bars need to be removable so that you could remove them for the mot and that harnesses had to be of the push button type as per a seat belt :?

This is sounding like the MOT testers are unsure themselves or that it depends how friendly you are with your MOT testers!

I thought they'd need a speedo so that a mileage reading could be put on an MOT cert.???
