Opel Manta or the MR2....out of the two...MR2 Sounds like a load of fun and can be super quick so i hear, although the Manta is a real classic and as oldschool as it gets however, parts might be a bit harder to source.
I would say MR2 is fave :thumb:

I'm afraid I just don't like the 280 at all, I owned a 260 2+2 about 20 years and loved it, I still want to own another one once I've finished my Pulsar.
I've driven a few 280's and they are not a patch on the earlier cars, They're just way to heavy and slow, Also all emissions crap chokes the performance.
It depends how many seats you need, If you only need two how about and MX5 I hear very good reports about them and I've seen a few with turbo's and super chargers fitted.

Well Suz,
Shame you missed my old Capri!
As said forget the MG. Too heavy and slow.
Datsun 240/260 with a sound body will be a fair bit of money i think.
Jay knows his Mantas so would be a good choice if you could find a sound one cheap.
I would go for the MR2. Cracking engine, but prone to a bit of rot around the back. A few decent ones for sale on ebay locally at the mo as was thinking about one myself as a track hack.
All the cars of this age and price are going to need a fair bit of work though and some new bits :-D
Hope this helps

I've had both a mk1 MR2 and an earlyish - well 1990 CRX 1.6 - the CRX would make an idela blast machine - but the MR2 was like a little roller skate.
I'd go MR2 - but watch out for the rot ...
There was a nice red one for sale on here a while back.

have to agree on the mk1 golf gti especially an early small rear light model pre 79 , find a g60 engine or even a 16v as there cheap, sort out the brakes and shocks and a nice set of wide 13" rims like ATS classics and would be lovely,
a manta would also be nice with a big engine
or one of these if you could find one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/343263.htm

Small one's are more juicy

 The second car I ever owned was a mk1 3.0Lt Capri GTXLR and although I loved it, It wasn't a patch on my 260Z and was positively lethal in the wet or icey conditions

Mk1 Golf as said is a very nice choice being lightweight and well built, My brother is into his golfs and all things VW and has had some very fast machinery over years.
Personally I don't like the Mk1 MR2's but horses for causes.
I remember racing an old manta fitted with the 2.3 engine and twin 48 webbers, And it was very rapid indeed  .
