use it or loose it mentality
i used it quite extensively, each trackday pushing the car and myself further and further, until it let go.
i didnt have track insurance, but i chose to build a cheap car from a cheap chassis and have rescued everything aside from the chassis. i wouldnt have been quite so reckless had it been a skyline or RX7 (ie something expensive)

some very interesting opinions have been raised on this thread and i think that it's good to hear peoples feelings on "using" their cars.
Yes i am also self employed which is more a way of life than a 9-5 ,but that dosen't mean i take the decision lightly regarding "using" my subaru, but inmo you haven't fulfilled the full performance car ownership experience until you have driven it on track. i for one was ready to sell my subaru not long after i had purchased it due to the fact i was so dissapointed that i couldn't use it to it's full potential on the public higway.
So i did a track day but not before i took some preventative measures which was a service, full fluid change and a brake overhaul. That was the car ready now we have to take on board another issue yes it is a subaru sti but fundementaly above all it is a road car not a racing car and to drive it like the latter will result in it dying rather expensively, i'm not saying don't drive it quick , just treat it with respect and some mechanical sympathy and you should have a very enjoyable experience, i had grossly under estimated what my subaru was capable of and have kept it with a big smile .
Now while driving the subaru quick is brilliant, i love the driving and this is why i purchased a dedicated track car and yes it is older than my subaru and worth a lot less but i don't think i would class it as undesirable it just gives me the chance to improve my driving and make me smile without the risk of damaging my pride and joy. so when i need to drive the subaru quickly i take it but when i want to drive i take the bmw . i think you perhaps have to lookat a track day as an open road with one way traffic and no speed cameras rather than a race track.
This is not meant to upset anybody its just my opinion but i will apologise if it has
cheers
