new turbo time

Post by andycaca »

for some time now, i have suspected my turbo oil seals of leaking. this manifests itself with a puff of white smoke on high-rev overrun and oil in the intake.

today, i removed the old turbo and started to fit the new one

starting to remove ancillaries

turbo, downpipe and FMIC pipework removed

here's the new turbo, Garrett T78
Image

ok really ;), old turbo on left and the new supra turbo on right
Image

i messed up rotating the exhaust housing so i need to seperate the two halves and move it about 5 degrees to align the oil feed/drain correctly
Image

this is the old turbo, check out the heavily cracked wastegate seat

the new turbo, immaculate wastegate. infact the entire turbo is in really good condition
Image

one third of the way through the transplant, i packed up and threw everything into the boot

hopefully tomorrow ill have finished rotating the turbo parts into the correct position and made a new actuator bracket to suit.

T78s are massive , the car is coming along just fine Andy. Very well done

Ramps are a life saver, Dave and Ian swear by them ;)

Any ideas about the lag from that big old tubbie?

i was joking about the T78, read the captions again ;)

unfortunately im not using the ramps for this. alex's car is on there with the fuel tank and rear discs off. its been there all week!

i made a new bracket for the tiny video camera yesterday too and recorded this short clip (didnt break the speed limit officer!) which would have been longer if the batteries hadnt died!

oh how the mighty have fallen! i took the car to the OC's challenge weekend in august and ended up rolling the mighty shed. she was still running but the chassis was a complete right-off. however, i still managed to drive it back to the paddock (and then from storage to the workshop to dismantle) in true rally style

today i've removed most of the ancillaries (FMIC, bumper, exhaust & downpipe, wheels, rear diff etc), tomorrow will be engine/box out and maybe the suspension if i get time.

once ive removed everything, its time to get out the PLASMA CUTTER!!!!!!!!! and chop the car into tiny bits. this will make removing the cage an absolute breeze as i can just cut the chassis up like it is made from butter

plasma cutter - the tool of champions, and those that dont fart about!

here are a few pics of its final outing...

and then in the afternoon...when it was getting REALLY FAST, disaster struck...

the car was still running and drove almost perfectly (ok so the driver rear suspension turret wasn't attached to the chassis anymore, only the cage! but thats a minor detail)

when i return in march the plan is to prep the new shell thoroughly and then put all the good bits from this car into it :)
new paintscheme hasn't been decided yet, but i am tempted by a green rizla painjob.

what do you think? :)

Keep plugging away Andy :thumb:

I remember when you joined me at Honington for those high speed runs (not that high as it turned out) I look forward to 2008 when we can get back on to some more circuits :D

Best of luck mate :D
