Different Types of Engine - Pro and Cons

Post by RX7 »

Thought it would be interesting to hear peoples opinions on different engines eg Pros, Cons, Cost for a Rebuild etc.

I'll start with

Rotary Engine - found in RX7 (FB, FC and FD), RX8, Cosmo etc

Image

Pros

Easily tunable through porting of the engine, different turbo variations etc
Extremely smooth right up to the redline.
Lack of internal parts so rebuild is easy to do and can be cheap.
Lightweight for a 2.6 piston equivalent.
Cheap Tax - classed as a 1.3.

Cons

Very sensitive to both fueling and induction.
Rotor tips can wear out anything from up to 80k miles (common for it to last up to 60k).
Not easy to create a fancy enginebay due to engine being buried eg no Cam cover
Very low torque

Price of a Rebuild

Toyota 1UZ-FE :D

Pros:

Fantastic build quality all alloy contruction.
Indestructable 6 bolt mains - stock bottom end good for 1200HP +
Unbelievable sound. :D :D
Superchager or twin turbos for real fun!!

Cons:

Very few tuning parts off the shelf
Karmen Vortex AFM is a real pain
Difficult to do anything with the ECU (working on this)
