It's a Canon MV730i

Ok, what version of Operating system are you running ? ... is it upto date? ... i.e. have you uploaded the most recent updates.

Go to the Canon website and down load the USB drivers for you camera ...

I noted this - Analogue/Digital converter - in the box is there additional hardware?.

When you start the software. What type of 'copy' are you doing? Are you choosing "full dv quality" or "MPeg quality" ? I use the latter for what i do.

Tried both and the preview quality but all are the same.

Problem solved. Had to buy a new computer (I think) and the new one works a treat with the camcorder. Just need to find time to get it posted.
