No testing yet - will see if I can test it on the way to North Weald but have never had fuel surge on the road so will not know for sure until on track I suspect.

How do you know when you have surge. Is it the mis-fire and hesitation or do you have a warning device for the det?
Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or hump it, piss on it and walk away!

Zak from Mocom has kindly lent me a set of front and rear 22mm Whiteline Adjustable Anti Roll bars along with drop links to see what impact they have on the drive characteristics of the car as part of the development of solutions for MY06 subarus. These have 6 levels of adjustment so should give me more than enough to tweak to get the perfect set up for my driving style. I fully expect that these will be a permanent addition to the car :D

In the softest setting, these allow 46% less body roll than the 20mm standard roll bars which was instantly noticeable on the drive home:
- the steering felt stiffer
- the car cornered slightly flatter but still had some movement to aid with general feel of the car/grip levels

=> a definite improvement :thumb:

The plan for the weekend is to do as many laps as I can to test the various set ups there. I will start with adjusting the rear bar to see what impact this has on the grip as well as feedback from the car in certain situations. As some of you know well the ring isnt the place to do extreme testing but it does give the greatest variety of conditions so the idea with this testing is to find a good compromise of grip vs feedback. Going too stiff can dull the car's feedback and make it difficult to tell if the car is losing grip - not a truly desirable trait.

Geometry was amended but we ran out of my available time to get the rear camber set at the desired level, so that will have to be revisited another time.

Zak and I also spoke about the options for future power in the car with some very interesting options available 8) More on those another time but suffice to say that the engine wont be a restricting factor :devil:

=======================================

24 hours til the ring trip and the main concern is making sure that everything is okay with the car for the long and quite frankly dull trip over (apart from the last 30 miles) and that every precaution has been taken to ensure the risk of a failure on track is minimised.

Goos skills Duncan, I was impressed with mine once they were fitted. As you say makes the car seems to corner flatter and I found it felt like it could "hang on" more in corners if you know what I mean.

Have a good trip, I will have to make one trip with you if I ever get my ar back together :roll: :x

Water Temp ==================

Following on from the thermostat issues at the nurburgring and the make shift repair of the jammed thermostat over there, a decision had to be made to replace it. Normal running on the road barely got the water temp up to 70C let alone 80+.

So... a zerosports cool therm was order from Lateral Performance and fitted by me, taking the opportunity to put some anti freeze in a system running pure water since the drain at the ring.

The zero sports stat opens at about 77C as opposed to 85 for the std stat so will run cooler and didnt cost much more than the standard part.

Fitting was straightforward and I gave it a good run afterwards to spot for leaks - there was none :) I must be getting better at this mechanic stuff. 8)

Water temps on the road now are over 80C but about 7C less than before.

Oil Temps have also dropped from around 90C in normal running to around 84 due to the cooling effect of the water.... so an added benefit.

Suspension ====================

I also took the opportunity to adjust the rear whiteline anti-roll bar from the current soft setting, which was a little stiffer than std but not much. This, i felt, was causing the car to understeer more than it used to so I needed to address the balance. Popping it into the middle position was not a hard job but was definitely fiddly as it had to be done with the wheels on the ground and not being in possession of a ramp it meant an uncomfortable time under the car undoing the bolts.

End result is good though with the steering now much more immediate even with the coilovers on softest settings all round and a good improvement on slow speed corners as well as quicker ones. Having thought for some time that less roll at the rear would help, this was quite pleasing to say the least.

Next Steps =====================

Rear camber needs sorting out to add more than the 1 degree that I have at present. I am aiming to 2 degrees of negative camber at the rear and will try the camber bolt route first in an effort to get this. If this does not do the job then some adjustable lower control arms may be called for 8)

Why add rear camber if you feel the car is pushing in the bends?

Because it was not able to keep tyre temperatures even across the tyre face. The outside was hottest and therefore needs more rear camber.

Great job there Dunc. I bet you are feeling very pleased with your work. I'ts very satisfying when your are able to solve problems and improve your car through a logical or trial and error bases. It just means that we are growing with our cars :grin:
