project "trak 'n' drift"

Post by jungle-jim »

well i finally have regained my internet so i have 7 weeks of skyline ownership to share with you.....

i would like to thank everyone in those weeks ( and future weeks lol ) for all their help including the collection of said "beastie" :-D

i finally got my grubby hands on the cheque and was immediatly deposited into my bank.

it gave me very little time to pick a car due to the following wednesdays BP drag night.

my heart ruled my head and i finally decided to go for what i have always wanted... a nissan skyline.

i looked on skyline forums for over 2 years and searched autotrader etc for possibly longer.

i recently joined DRIFTWORKS after gareth had posted a link of a "ghostdancer" car.

well the day the cheque went in i saw "her"

Image

i PM'd will straight away and used bladey's name to blag first dibs

i drove the 200 miles to worthing near brighton to view her on the friday.

the drive was monotonous (sp?) and slow.

after 4 hours and reaching school rush hour i made it.

i spent all of 50 seconds out of the drivers seat and straight into the skylines passenger one!!

the drive was very firm but exciting.

i couldn't wait to have a go!!

we drove to a local post office to post a letter.

it was very warm and i was gagging for a drink!!

anyway, we approached a pair of roundabouts linked by a fly-over.

whilst explaining the cars equipment and history, will proceeded to use the DRIFTWORKS handbrake and do 2 full laps of the roundabout sideways!!

we went over the fly-over and repeated said drifting on the other roundabout!!

the look on this particular old ladies face as she waited to join the roundabout was priceless!!

although i don't condone doing this on a public road it certainly gave me a good idea of what she is capable of!!

so with a deposit left and documents confiscated i made the naff journey home.

i was able to secure a lift for mondays collection and the weekend went very sssllooowwww............

MONDAY

this was rather a hectic start as i had yet to insure the car.

i tried one more time to get a quote from keith michaels but alas i was forced to transfer the insurance from my family rover to the skyline to pick her up.

we left at 11:30am and arrived 4pm to drive her away.

a few parts were changed over the weekend to drop the price and possibly one mod led to the impending incident

i filled her up and we were on out way.

for some reason the 4th and final journey was much more fun

i used just a quarter of my tank for the first 120 miles.

why 120 miles?

well this is when the steering went funny lol.

i pulled over to discover this......

Image

Image

so i proceeded to remove the space saver from the boot but couldn't find the jack?

i rang will and he said there wasn't one :x

my friend who took me had left dartford and headed east to colchester to go home to beccles.

i rang him and he made the journey across country to haverhill and onto cambridge to rescue me....

Image

so i spent 3 hours driving at 40KMH on a spacesaver.

i reached home at 11:30pm a whole 12 hours later

the next morning resulted in a visit to my local tyre centre...

Image

Image

i wont bother going into the fiasco there...... :?

but we also discovered the left wheel had a nut missing!! :o

we found out why.... no bloody bolt!!! :o :o

the result was i needed different wheels.

thankfully ben came to my rescue for the drag night and i collected the wheels from him.....

BEFORE

Image

AFTER

Image

i was quite pleased with the new look and that i dont have to clean them so i bought them off ben and sold the volks

the drag night was quite succesful putting in a PB of 15.29 @ 94 mph.

not bad considering i had only owned the car 36 hours lol.

gotta love them lights.....

cheers,

so i then tackled the brakes and wheel nut....

i got eddie to sort out EBC red stuff pads and a new wheels bolt ( bought 2 just incase )...

Image

i was pensive about tackling the wheel bolt as i could damage the wheel bearing or other parts in the area...

with a spray of WD40 and some healthy taps with a 3lb lump hammer it was out!!...

Image

Image

Image

pads went in......

Image

Image

i had contacted trev again about his BLITZ nur spec exhaust and i took ownership rather quickly

out with the old.....

Image

on with the new....

Image

Image

she now sounds rather sweet :D

with the lack of internet, it gave me more time to tinker so after buying a pod and gauge of "Mr windscreen" i fitted that too :-D

first job was to find a gromet for the vacuum pipe.

i saw the OE one and assumed it went into the bulk head.....

Image

but it didn't lol......

Image

so a new hole needed to be found.

and i saw the wing mounted one.....

Image

so i pushed a screwdriver into it....

Image

Image

this comes out above the accelerater pedal.

a lick of the vacuum pipe and it slipped in the hole ( oooerrr!! )

Image

i fitted the pod temporaraly to check positioning etc....

Image

i then extended the wires to reach the various power suplies it required....

Image

the pipe was through....

Image

i used various wires the the dash switches to get it to illuminate.....

Image

and it can change colour too :-D

after the wheel issue i had the tracking checked asap.

the caster and toe was all over the place....

Image

Image

Image

Image

this was then sorted....

Image

Image

as you can see i have nearly 3% of camber.

this is due to the S14 lower arms.

i also bought a new wheel and boss but discovered it wasn't a straight swap.

the skylines HICAS and speed-sensitive power steering device interfer's with any standard boss.....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

so i have yet to get this on :( ......

one day i discovered a fuel leak on a piece of piping.

this was replaced but unbeknown to me i had let a piece of rubber go up inside.

i slowly lost peak revs until i could only idle!!

i got towed home and replced the fuel filter and all was well again lol....

Image

the few weeks have given me plenty of time to get used to her and she is my daily driver atm......

Image

also in my time i have come across a few prentenders......

Image

Image

don't ask.......

a couple of weeks later it was time to visit snetterton for the second time with the club.

i discovered a fluid smooth car but lacking initial oomph ( i still had the standard exhaust on at this time )

and had my first go at powersliding out of corners by using the chicane.

that was fun :-D

marham was looming close and so i got a set of SABELT clip-in harnesses and some more pads to bed in...

Image

Image

Image

so things to do over winter is....

a change of all belts
de-limiter
proper wheel boss
new tyres
different suspension
new front discs
FMIC
removal of A/C

future plans will include forged pots ( possibly boring out to 2.1 litres )
a bigger tubby
AVC-R
bucket seats

after marhams fun i am defo gonna concentrate on the drifitng too :D

Well done Jamie. Nice to see you making some progress already and the driving looks like there's some progress there too :thumb:

I take it that was Trev/Rolygtst's exhaust?

yeah. sure is.

interestingly it is 3" all the way up to the joint for the turbo elbow where it goes down to 2".

the elbow is 2.5".

i have found a pipe that goes from the back of the turbo to the down pipe around the cat section.

i might get one of these once i replace the turbo for a bigger one.
