Brakes?

Post by ValoSunnyGti »

ok i keep seeing things on various forums about brakes, like "i got these new 6 pots" or "just tried out my new 4 pots". What is this all about, could some one explain these to me as i am totally lost with it.

Pots refers to the number of pistons within the caliper. It is a common misconception that the more pistons the better (unless you're comparing four pot Imprezas to magnificent six cylinder Skylines :D )

Can of worms...........

How much can you afford?
What do you use the car for now and what do you intend to use it for in the forseeable future?
What size wheels do you use?
How do you rate the brakes at present?
What is your current set up and what condition is it in?

Honestly answering the above will start to provide a framework for me or anyone else to help you any further.

Can I just add to that list of Qs? (resisting to rise to Impreza vs. skyline bait  )

Depending on use, is it the brakes that need an upgrade or could the pad material be unsuitable? You could save a lot of money and hassle by correct pad selection.

Good points Gerry

I seem to remember young Tom's car was/is pretty standard so pad choice will almost certainly be the way forwards at this time.

im not sure if the gti's and the gtir's share the same brakes. but when i got my R the std brakes where shocking, so within a couple of weeks of buying the car i orderd a set of willwood 4-pots, and totally transformed the brakeing. a hell of a improvement over std highly recommend.

Good addition Gerry and also a very good point if maximum benefit with minimum expense is required. Although a nice looking caliper behind a nice wheel does finish the job off.

Tim and if in any doubt at all about the way you deciede to go dont hesitate to ask as many questions as you like untill youre happy about what your choice, everyone on here are more than willing to help
