Two questions really.

1. I am doing all the little boring bits to the car at the moment, like servicing. I have been told by some people that its worth spending a bit more money on ignition leads as they make a difference. But then I get told by others, no names mentioned *cough* ian200sx *cough* that they have always used standard ones as they dont believe it does make a difference. Any one got an opinion at all? Not sure whether I just get standard ones or.....

2. This is probably the questions that really makes the stupid questions section worthwhile!!!!! My car is N/A I use V power fuel, if I was to put the old octane boost in aswell for the track day, would it make any difference, or is it only noticeable on turbo cars??

1) - I would say fit the best you can afford as you will probably still be thinking that you should have done it if you went with the std ones

2) It cant hurt :D

1) Definitely uprate your ignition leads, especially if your car is a few years old. You will always find 'do this, dont do this' comments from people. In my eyes changing old parts for newer stuff is always good !!!

You might even find that uprated ones are cheaper than the standard parts !!!

2) Basically if your car is on a standard map, put the fuel/additives in it says to in the handbook, it its been mapped by a tuner to a specific spec fuel/additive then keep putting that in.

Cars brains are very simple things, they go:

a)How much air is coming in to the engine?
b)Ok, then ill squirt "this" much fuel in to match.

They know nothing of the octane of the fuel in the tank, about the only thing some (Mitsi FTO for instance) do is go:

c)Oh shit its knocking, ill retard the timing a bit as the fuel may be shitty.

Subaru do c) aswell :)

Octane booster can help to keep det under control on a track day though.

i dont really known the specs of fathoms car, but with a standard ecu youd expect to hit fuel cut before det occured, that said my experience is all nissan 200sx (or mg midget, but thats probably not relevant :-D )

I would only use octane booster on a dedicated track car, and have a dyno run to set the timing etc.
Its a bit of a slog to set it up for the day and have to de-tune it for the road.

1) Yes you need to make sure your leads, cap, rotor, plugs are all working to their best or you will lose valuable power needlesly. Some 'uprated' leads though are not actually as good as a new set of OE ones. This is the case with the Pulsar Gti-r. DP Motorsport and other tuners modding these to 500bhp recommend standard nissan leads over aftermaket performance ones. I would ask a Toyota tuner what they recommend. Try Fensport.
2) As has been said octane booster can help to reduce the chances of det and may give you a couple more horses

in your case, definitely use standard genuine (not blueprint branded) ignition leads.

in my opinion theres no need for octane booster either, even when doing trackdays. having a decent cold air feed (or keep the stock airbox and fit a TRD panel filter) will be of more benefit.

Thanks for the advice guys! I have just fitted a K&N induction kit, in answer to anycaca's post, I am now going to email Fensport re: leads, changed my brake fluid today for AP Racing 5.1, went to fit Ferodo DS2500 too but they sent the wrong ones so hopefully I will get them before the weekend! Denso spark plugs are on the way, and done a good old oil change today too! Eddy, I shall PM you!
