Oil Cooler Fitment Questions
Well, managed to fit the cooler yesterday. Mounted it, vertically, behind the grille, i.e. with connections one above the other. The idea being that, if I could determine which way the oil flowed I'd connect the flow to the bottom and return at the top, to expel any air from the core.
I started by determining the best place for the cooler. Left it loose in position and fitted it's hose connectors. In this instance I used a straight at the bottom and a 90o at the top. Then began at the fixed position, the oil filter.
As the oil filter is surrounded on three sides by exhaust manifold, I fitted the sandwich plate with it's connections at the fourth side. This meant the pipes had to pass towards the rear of the car, turn 90o to the n/s inner wing and then another 90o along the front to the cooler.
I mounted the plate, with 2 x 45o hose connectors and also fitted the filter, to prevent the ingress of dirt while I fiddled and then, loosely pushed both ends of the hose onto the fittings. Using cable ties to hold the pipe in place along the route, I ended up with a loop of pipe at the cooler. Using masking tape, wrapped around the pipe, I marked the cut points at each connector. Then off to the local hydraulic place to have them crimped on.
After a great deal of discussion about orientation of the fittings, which I'd forgotten to mark, the fittings were crimped.

Nice one Gerry,
Even more reliability now then?

Thanks Dunk. The result looks promising although I didn't get the 19row Setrab core I'd wanted, this one's a 16 row. See how we fare at Silverstone this week and then Marham on 1st. Marham's where I saw 136o temps in April.dynamix wrote:Good work sir - another issue ticked off the list :thumb:
Saw your thread on the idle side of things Gerry - I presume that is solved too now ?

Being in something of a hurry on Friday, as I was also hoping to swap the brakes, before Saturday's event. I didnt't get to take any pics. also, cameras in my greasey hands aren't a good idea. I'm not 100% happy and I'll re-do the brackets, then take some pics.
Idle's an odd one and it does at least do it now, although switching on the air con, during yesterday's rain killed it stone dead. It would seem to be the 02 sensor, the idle returned after the plug fiddling but it's still not well.

Nice one Gerry, glad you got it fitted okay, I am going to order some "proper" hosong and connections this week ready to sawp when i get my car back, just too scared to run the rubber hoses and push on fitting now.
Intersting replies to how to mount the cooler core and inlet/outlet on 22b. I was told the same as what John Felstead was saying, doesn't matter the orienatation as ita a presurised system, so you shouldn't get any airlocks, but I suppose it doesn;t hust to go belt and braces, I just mounted mine the way it was dude to ease of intallation.
be keen to see a few pics of your tho, just to compare.

Oil temps were 80s on M way, normally 90+
100 peak on the sprint but it was a cool day
I'm inclined to agree with Andy. Pressurised system need bleeding. they don't air lock as such but the air gets compressed to the system pressure and will take up space. I reckon, if you measure the temps on your cooler the top won't be so hot.

Nice, in the 80's, that almost too cold now Gerry
Maybe you will have to change back to a standard thermostat, as anything under 85 I was told doesn't allow the moisture to burn off the oil, increasing engine wear, but then Millers 10-60 rates full protection form 75 degrees so who knows :?
I did measure the cooler core, when warm and running, and the temp across the core was uniform, no hot/cold spots. So I assume its okay??? :?
