Hey Gerry, It is great to find another newf owner in the ranks. I wish I had known, as I would have picked your brains on a couple of showing queries at the drag night.
I agree with what Gerry has written. I have always been a dog owner/lover, and always wanted a great big bear to wrestle with
Being new to Newfie ownership before finding the fight breeder be bought a stack of books, and researched as much as possible. They do have problems, and if you do not get the right dog from a respectable breeder you can have problems (which it sounds Gerry has experience of?) - but you can still have problems even if you do everything right.
Once we decided it was for us we found the cutest 3 weekold black bitch and put our money down (Her grandfarther won Crufts working class, and both parents were supurb dogs with all the right bits in the right places - and both non-droolers as a bonus). Next we bought a house next to a river for her
Would not be without her now, and she gets on really well with our 7yo labx.
Having a 40kg mischevious puppy is quite a handful
Some puppy pics in my gallery, I must post some more recent ones as she is a *little* bigger now.

Hi Tony, good job you didn't start talking to me about Newfies or we'd still be there. I used to be quite involved and knew loads of people who are well respected in the Newfy world and made loads of good friends.
I never went in for showing. That BoS was a fluke. We were at a local village fete to help the Dog Warden with an obedience demo. So, with nothing else to do, I just entered both dogs into the Exemption show, that was part of the fete. Neither of them were interested in showing and wouldn't 'move' in the ring. The black was immediately thrown out but the Brown was 'on his toes' that day, there was probably a bitchin season somewhere
and won the open class and went on to win BoS. He has too much white for the Newfy standard so wouldn't get anywhere at a 'proper show'. However the judge was a Red Setter man, so liked the bigger breeds and he told me afterwards that his movement was fantastic. Made me really proud, as you can imagine.
Fortunately my two have been pretty healthy. I was very friendly with most on the Newf club's Health and Longevity Committee so I used my two to help in any research that was being done.
I'll leave it there or I'll bore you to tears.
Do you swim your girl? What about carting and Nosework? They're very good all the working aspects.

Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or hump it, piss on it and walk away!

We have done a couple of local fun shows, and Molly won best pup and BoS. We recently entered her into what we thought was a fun show, and turned out to be quite serious with crufts qualification points on offer - the judge told me she moves very well and would have won if I had not let her down by not presenting and showing her correctly pmsl (She still got points for crufts mind, not that we take is serious).
She loves swimming of course, normally twice a day, leaping a good 10ft off the bank when going for a stick. I have done a couple of rescue sessions with her in the river and it is just instinctive for her to come after me, tap me on the back, and pull me to the bank when I grab hold. She nearly pulled Linsdey in when she saw me for the first time

That's better :thumb: thanks Tony. They're both smashing looking dogs. How old is Molly there? Is she in the 'ganglies'
You've no doubt noticed how Newfies swim differently to other dogs. No doggie paddle it's more of a underwater crawl. If you can stand in a boat above them and the water's clear, it's very interesting to see.

6 months in those pics. Couple of weeks off 1 year now, and her hip scoring. We are hoping to bread her in the next year.
Yes I have read and noticed the swimming technique.
She has never been Ganglie, she looks like a well performed but miniture newf. Just having trouble with the groming as her ear hair is very long. I'll let you know when I get some recent pics up.
