Offset question - upgrading wheels

hi guys,

im changing me 17s for 18s on 17s the offset if et53 do i assume the offset needs to be the same on 18s?

probably the stupidest question ever!

It depends how wide the new wheels are, how much arch clearance you've got and what size tyres you want to fit...

I'm going from 225 45 17 to 235 40 18s
I understand there's plenty of room in the arches.. im ugrading the wheels to get AP's and would like to be confident they will clear the brakes !!

You could go for a slightly lower offset then if you wanted, that would push the wheels further out of the arches and should give more caliper clearance (but this is usually more dependant on the spoke design).
