Scoob UK gear ratios a problem for sprinting?

Post by Andy916 »

Hi all,

I'm considering an STi4, with sprints, trackdaying and road use in mind. It has a recon box, done by Power Engineering 2yrs ago, with what I believe are UK ratios. I like the car a lot but am thinking the longer ratios might be less than ideal for sprints. Can anyone comment?

Engine is standard apart from decat/filter, and I envisage a remap but no major further engine tuning.

cheers
Andy

Hi Andy

Just got your message. Are they UK ratios, UK diffs, or both?

Cheers

Andy

if you get it for the right price you can find an STI gearbox and pop that in :D

I think the difference between UK & JDM are the diff ratios. 4.444:1 on JDM 3.9 on UK don't think the actual gear ratios are different also the drop gear ratios 1:1 on JDM 1.1:1 on UK. If the car's fitted with a UK box complete, the rear diff would need to have been replaced too.

Easiest way to tell is post up what speed it's doing at say 2K revs. If you have JDM ratios it's 22mph/Krpm in 5th for a v4 STi

Nice car btw, look forward to seeing/chasing it :D

Also, to answer your question. If it is UK it'll be ultra economical on the road. Sprints may not be a problem as all the circuits are different and in some it could be beneficial (fewer gear changes) but acceleration will be down, of course, although you'll have a few more BHP than a UK car. Frightening top speed, if you can pull the revs in 5th and find a long enough straight :-D You could fit lower section tyres to compensate. You won't be able to fit 15" wheels over the 4 pot calipers.

Don't change the ratios. Get more power 8)

Slighty off topic, how are you getting on with your PPG gear set Geryy, as this has UK rations doesn't it? Is there a big difference to your STI box?

The PPG has near STi ratios but as I said, I think the JDM & UK ratios are similar, just the diffs, etc that are different.

Andy, another point, unless Andy knows different, you can't remap the v3 & v4 i.e. MY97 & MY98 ecus.

Ahh, cool, just wondering for future reference

Yes, Andy on the 97-98 models the best option is an aftermarket ECU, such as an Apexi, Gems etc. I know Power Engineering does a re-map type chip but I think the cost is not much less than a proper replacement ECU!

Good luck if you get the car :D

97/8 on the drawing board, should be out the end of this year. Andy already asked me the question :)

Ok, at 2k revs it's doing 50mph. Funny thing is though, my old '95 JDM WRX had exactly the same ratio. Both with the same 215/40-17s on (also got the same result for 205/50-16s, as you might expect).
