MR2 Turbo coversion help needed!!

Post by PeteMR2 »

Hey ive started my turbo coversion on my MR2 N/A.
Both engines are rev 2 and the turbo engine is in!! Took 2 nights to do with a couple of friends and all has gone well the one think im not sure on is my N/A uses a mechanical speedo drive coming out the gearbox and the turbo lump is electrical... Does this mean i need a new set of clocks and have to do some tricky wiring??

It would be great if some one has some info so hopfully i can get it sorted for the weekend!! :-D

Hi Pete,

Have you looked at whether your manual drive will fit into the tubby box? The electronic sender pulls out, and knowing MrT it will be the same fitment as your mechanical bit. If not I think you will need to fit MR2 tubby clocks.

I dont know how fancy wiring is going to turn the mechanical drive of your speedo clock ;-)

How are you getting on with the Tubby ECU and Loom? are you splicing it into the N/A cabin loom, or replacing the lot?

The loom is all done lucky it just all plugged straight in to the passenger footwell!! its running a blitz ecu and that is all fine too!
Started first time this eveing so success!!! :D
Going to test drive tomorow..
I know fancie wiring wont turn that needle lol!! i ment if i have to change for a set electronic speedo clocks will i have to run more wires up as i take it they arnt there at the mo.

i also got told elsewhere i have to get a mechanical speedo drive from a rev 1 tubby tht will sort my problem pretty quick just the prob is finding one!!
apparently the N/A drive wont fit but i havent tried yet.

Well done Pete,

It sounds like you are doing blindingly well :thumb:

I read your post and though 'Jeesh that will be a nightmare to get running', but I love being proved wrong.

What else you planning, you should be able to up the boost a little on the blitz ecu, if you have not already. Is the engine standard? Does it still have the paper HG? I have done a fair bit with extracting some extra power from the Rev2 engine.

Are you goint to be able to make the drag night? Sounds like it will deffo be ready in time :D

Just got her home running standed boost around 11 psi holds all the way!!
every thing seems to be fine which is a relief!

its running blitz access ecu, HKS hi power exahust single exit, custom downpipe so no cat, blitz sus airfilter, trd lsd, and apparently its a stage 3 hybrd turbo im waiting for the paper work just to confirm it.
its got standed intercooler so i dunno how much can turn the boost up to... i think around maybe 15psi should be plenty for now
Just glad its all gone well except i need that speedo drive i should have it soon tho :D :D

Unless you have fitted a metal head gasket on a Rev2, then 12psi should be your limit - as the paper one will blow quickly much over this. Standard is 8psi btw.

Who did the tubby work? 'Stages' do not really mean anything, as these are only the stages of work that a given shop do as standard specs.

I know a lot of MR2 boys like to fit a Carge Cooler setup from a Rev3 Celica as replacement to the IC, as airflow to the back is an obvious issue, where you can mount the CC rad at the front of the car.

Oh manual contollers work fine for us; just make sure it is a grainger valve type, and not a bleed valve.

Keep us posted :D

yeah its not a bleed valve i looked in to all of that part.
im affraid i cant tell you much about the turbo untill i get the paper work through.
Im looking to uprate the head gasket with a trd or hks one and do the bolts at the same time as i dont know if this has been replaced.
according to the mr2 only mag the standed ones can blow from about 270bhp.
but im happy with what its running now, so much better then my n/a!
let ya know when ive got my speedo bck!! :P
