Hicas Problem???
Just been out in a friends 32GTR and when you corner in it you sometimes get thrown the opposite way to what you are steering! He,s just had a new tyre put on one side at the back, could this affect anything? Hicas light is on all the time as well, all fluid levels are fine. Also rev counter has a mind of its own, elec prob?
Sounds like a hicas fault to me.
It is so much hassle having hicas at times.
Disconnect the battery and press barke pedal a few times bit make sure the wheels are dead straight ahead first. Then make sure the wheels are dead straight ahead again and then re connect battery, see if the light is on now??
As for the tyre that sounds crazy if it is not the same as the one on the other side of the axle? If one is new and one is old it will effect the handling lots.

Re: Hicas Problem???
Sounds like what happened to mine just after I bought it - hicas light kept coming on - backend doing weird sheite - Hicas now locked out and never looked back sinceMr Windscreen wrote:Just been out in a friends 32GTR and when you corner in it you sometimes get thrown the opposite way to what you are steering! Hicas is meant to steer the opposite way with low speed cornering to aid turning. It steers into the corner at high speed to hold the back end in.
Problem is, the hicas ecu picks up it's speed signal from the same place everywhere else does. So if your friend has a speed converter fitted, the car *thinks* it's going slower than it is and the hicas will do silly things.
Result is, the back end gets thrown out by the hicas at much higher speeds than its meant to!

That is a very good point - is the car running in MPH or KMH, also Darren, I know your car came from SkylinesRus, they would have fitted a gearbox to convert the KMH to MPH ...
Are you still using that on your car .... if so I'd strongly recommend removing it .. I tried the car both with and without and it is so much better without.
As Charles says the ECU is responding to the signal it's getting so actions it would normally take are happening when they shouldn't ... for example the steering stiffening should cut in around 15 - 20 KM's .. how ever if you have it converted to MPH it's happening at 24 and 32 KM's ...
Hicas is also speed controlled so .. it's carrying out the actions that it was programmed to do at 50KM's ... but the conversion it making it do them at 80KM's ...
All in all very dangerous .. and probably a good chance that you mate is running in MPH. To remove the coverter - get underneath and you'll see a little gearbox coming off the gearbox - unscrew and remove - reconnect the speedo cable straight in the gearbox.
As to the speedo ... electric fault ... what year is your friends car ? ... if it's a Pre Aug 1991 I can sell him a rev counter as I have a spare - it won't however work in a post Aug 1991.

But Ian ... the steering, braking, attessa and hicas are all speed controlled to some extent ...
so I agree it is probably worth locking it out at the rear the rest is still affected .. I remember reading about one fella who's GTR helped him crash into the crash barrier due to incorrect interuptation of the speed - he basically lost the backend and eased off the power as the power was being brought in at the front ... if he'd been running in KM's he would have been able to save it .... (interestingly the car was fixed at Abbey and my mate trevor bought it - only to be smashed in the same side whilst sitting at traffic lights - a car with bad karma)

Darren take the converter off for a few journey's and i bet you'll never refit it ... mine is still sitting in my glove box.
If he bought the other red one .. then that was off the new owner and I guess not prepared to the same level as your car and my car .. is it the one with the aerials stuck on the back window .. plus I thought a girl bought that ? ...

I agree here, the problems spread right across the board with the skyline gtr as so many things are speed sensetive.murano3 wrote:But Ian ... the steering, braking, attessa and hicas are all speed controlled to some extent ...
I've seen similar problems on jdm cars with converters that have auto gearboxes. Stupidly lumpy downshifts, odd shifting patterns etc. all solved by the removal of the dreaded speedo converter.
The only disadvantage of removing the converter is that the car will again be limited to 112mph/180kmh but there are ways round that. If you've only ever driven the car with the converter fitted, drive it without and see what happens!
