TommySTI's Ring trip 26-28 May

Post by Tommy »

It's only three weeks away until my and my friend Chris's inaugural trip to the Motor Mecca! Excitement is already getting the better of me so I thought I'd start a thread in here ready for my report back.

Unfortunately I won't be taking my STI. That will have to wait until next year. Instead, Chris and I will be jumping in the Warrior and sticking his Magnum Cobra on a trailer.

The car has had a few teething problems since it was bought last year but it's pretty much sorted now. Problems have included 3 sets of snapped driveshafts (one set was done on the Santa Pod start line which was a little embarrassing), incorrectly set up cams, incorrectly built diff - to name a few. But as I say, it's just about there now. It's just had new breather pipes (ones on it were too small), an oil catch tank, a diff rebuild and another go at the geometry - something that needs to be done in stages otherwise it would take a week due to its nature and accessibility.

Here's some pics:

Looks like you'll have a blast.

One question though, how loud is the car? They're pretty hot on noise testing at the 'ring now and if the car is too loud >100dB then you'll get chucked off the curcuit.

Even if you 'think' it'll be ok I'd still think about getting some bungs made up to quieten it down if needs be

The pipes you see in the photos were specially made for track work. Previously it had 3.5" straight through uber loud pipes.

At Bedford the other week it measured just over 100dB on the static test with these new pipes so it's going to have more packing added to the silencers soon.

Cheers guys. The hardest thing is going to be keeping our cool and not getting ahead of ourselves. We'll have a full day and then a few hours the next morning so I hope we get a good number of laps in! And as Brian says, I hope the weather is on our side.

What a big, stinking shame! I would have liked to be writing right now about an incredible first ever visit to the Ring where great speed and enjoyment were dealt out in equal measure. Unfortunately this is what happened.

Soon after arriving at the Ring on Saturday (in blazing sunshine) we got the Cobra off the trailer and zoomed down to the track to find the main car park. After a bit of hit and miss we finally got there and started lapping up the atmosphere (excuse the pun) even though the track was closed. We even bumped into Nige from this forum and two guys in a GT3RS (sorry I didn
