Wilwood brakes - should this happen?

Post by Tommy »

Hi. Some of you may know I attended a trackday at Bedford a couple of weeks ago. My friend came along in his car which is equipped with Wilwood calipers, pads and discs. This is the result of the trackday (he only did about 15 laps duing the day)

Should this happen? I've never seen such a severe fracture on a disc.

They look really deeply scored - were they like this beforehand?

not completely sure but I don't think so. The set up has probably done less than 1000 miles.

I have seen worse.......

I cracked one of my new discs right through from one side to the other @ Snetterton, as some people saw :o

Poor quality rotors, insufficient bedding-in and heat cycles, rotor to bell mounting stresses, etc. etc. can all cause problems.

on a Magnum 427SF (a Cobra replica). The calipers are 4 pots and the car is light - very light.

He's replaced the rotors with more items from Wilwood but the highest spec they do, so hopefully it won't happen again. We shall see after The Ring later this month.

How have the replacements been ? .. or not tracked them yet?.

I am running AP Rotors with the K-Sport set up and once I have bedded them in a bit more, I will try and kill them on a trackday - all paid for by Apex Performance :D

As Geoff said, there are many contributing factors to this.If everything has been done correctly, 100% then no it shouldn't. However, it could be a number of things from the rotors being installed at with the wrong torque rating, to a sticky piston to not being run in correctly.

It could also be a severely warped hub, however, he should have felt this through the steering wheel.

Personally, I'm not a Wilwood fan. I will recomend AP, Endless or Brembo for a caliper upgrade, but it is entirely up to the cusomer.

Geoff, could you please let me know how you get on with the K-tech set up, either pm or give me a call, it would be much appreciated.

Hope he gets on ok with the new rotors

Lloyd :-D
