I seem to recall that it depends on the material the helmet is made from.

Will try and find some info on it.

gareth is coming across as stifflers little brother pmsl

i was gonna mention about stickers on lids, but most modern helmets are ok.

it was the old fibreglass ones that had laminate go weak due to the adhesive on the decals.
