I've finally found where my coolant is going - into my sump - so rather than muck around fixing my current 1.8 I'm looking for either a complete engine with or without ancillaries. I already have a number of new parts on my existing engine.
I would prefer a recently built one - but a known good unit will suffice. Please let me know if you know of one for sale in the local area.
Car is a 1991 Big bumper MKII 1.8 16V.
Cheers in advance

Ok, I've now sourced a good 16v engine - good as in the bottom end has been rebuild with new parts, rings, reground crank etc. The head has been ported (apparently) My choices are to take it and have the head finished somewhere - any recommendations or can anyone help with sourcing an uprated head? - or recently refurbed head.
I'm now also looking for a MKI 8V carbed engine for a 1988 Clipper Convertible. (Which is for sale but doesn't have an engine) - car is minty, black with a new roof and refurbed BBS RA alloys. Needs putting back together though

Hi,
On the original post, you said you had water in the sump, I don't know if you know, but the Vw's of this age had problems with the heat exchanger above the oil filter. It was a common problem, and the result was water in the sump.
Forgive me if I'm stating something you already know!!
Cheers,
Gareth.

I didn't - thanks for the feedback - when it's stipped down we'll check it out - interestingly - there is now no evidence of the water (I'll add I dropped the car into a big puddle a few weeks back and wonder if that caused the water) I keep checking the dip stick and it looks purely like oil in there... I've found the coolant leak and it seems to be a gasket on the right hand side of the engine. There is no mayo at all in the head.
So going to pull the engine apart and replace the gaskets (still got the spare unit) - going to view the crank and the shells to see if there is a problem there - based on the fact that it is running fine even though it has a few leaks I might not need to go to such extreme measures of binning the original unit.
Plus I'm going to be selling the car shortly to my sister.
