Any ideas why my car now won't fire up.

hi ben to check for a power drain on your car is simple take the negative lead of the battery and put a multimeter between the negative lead and the negative on the battery if you have a high voltage you no you got a prob :x


the other thing i would try is earthing the engine you could have an earth (body to engine) broken some where which would cause you big probs (cutting out,not starting,and could cause a misfire)could be worth a try

I am really hoping it is an earth problem - had it before a while back - I was going to fit the grounding kit to see if that saved the day.

Oddily enough someone suggested the Alternator before on another site, I've suffered earthing problems on mine before but it was so long ago I can't remember the exact symptoms - I'm sure they were quite similar - driving along and the whole car cutting out.

Matter of interest - how do you actually test the alternator?.

you need to put the meter across the two battery terminals.

you should get a reading of about 13.5 volts on tick over.

give the engine a rev and it should rise not much more than 14.5 volts.

put the meter on 20volts setting.

check you have a battery warning light coming on with the ignition.

and make sure it goes out when the engine starts.

if it doesn't rise about 12 volts its possibly had it.

i know of a place to possibly get it recon'd ( its where i used to work ) .

finding most parts could be hard in this country.

but some parts could be interchangable with other nissan units.

Did you get any fault codes when you put the ecu into diagnostic mode?

Well firstly thanks to Paul I now have a spare Alternator - top fella.

I've got the fault code list ready. Is it likely to tell me I have an earth problem?.

I laugh as I searched on the word Alternator and low and behold Mr Bell's name appeared.

If it's not the alternator I will sleep soundly knowing I have a spare. Also the Paul, cheers for lending me your old ECU.

Jamie, I don't think you've seen where the alternator is on a skyline - you'd lose you hands trying what you've suggested :) - thanks though.

i'm not sure i understand what you mean ben?

why would you be anywhere near the alternator?

to test its charging you touch the terminals of the battery?

i spent a year working for an auto electrician's and did quite a few charging checks and thats how it was done.

just incase you are confused about my post :wink:
