No. he is getting 24 bangs per revolution due to split timing. I will fix the link. Its the equivilent of a 12 cylinder engine.

theres only one phrase to sum that up then, and that is "fuck me!" :)

in my limited experience, i had always thought 2-stroke engines made the best power, but thats just been blown out of the water by these wankel rotaries!
edit: in my defence, i did say it was a quick 60 seconds research ;)

12A = 1146cc = 69.9 cu in (small 2 rotor)
13B = 1308cc = 79.8 cu in ( 13B 2 rotor ie fd3s rx7 )
20B = 1962cc = 119.7 cu in ( cosmo 3 rotor )
26B = 2616cc = 159.7 cu in ( 4 rotor ie leman mazda 787b)

Perspective....
308 cu in V8 = 5047cc

What people/enthusiasts/engineers/governing bodies etc get so confused about is that they try to rate the Wankel on a two stroke cycle or on a 4 stroke cycle and not on a Wankel cycle.

It can conform to any of the above so long as you have a basic understanding of time line events.

13B as follows

at 360deg (2 stroke)
=1308cc

at 720deg (4 stroke)
=2616cc

at 1080deg (Wankel)
=3924cc

The last one is the only correct one, none of the others are right because the engine has not completed anything,

So multiply mazda figure by 2 as they rate it as a 4 stroke engine ie

12 A = 2292cc
13 B = 2616cc
20 B = 3924cc
26 B = 5232cc

Amazing engines and just shows how tuneable they are.

Do mazda have the patent on these or do the other manufacturers not believe in the concept?

norton made rotary engines a long time ago.

i think its the cost and high rate of wear?

I think the rotary lives on in steam engines now. There is a company that make a rotary go kart engine ( AR50 )

I think mazda mostly own the rights to the rotary engine. The problem with rotaries is the efficency due to the irregular shaped combustion chamber. This leads to the engine requiring more fuel ( BSFC 0.62 ) also creating lots of hydrocarbons due to this and needing oil injection to lube the rotor housings.
