New track car

Well as a few of you know, my Skyline is currently off the road undergoing a full engine rebuild. The last three years of track days, drag racing etc. together with 500bhp on standard internals meant that things were getting a bit rattly.

Anyway with an estimated huge bill on the horizon, I have been considering buying a cheapy car to use on track, to give the Skyline an easier life, with just the odd outing on a dry track:)

I was thinking that with a lower power car, I could learn lines and braking points better, rather than with the Skyline which to be honest can be a bit of a handfull on smaller circuits and is just silly in the wet.

Great idea. E30 all the way. Light, quick and very plentiful for parts. When you see how many of these are still used in anger on circuits, it makes sense as the best budget choice.

As for BigPower...........you've seen my old Sierra Geoff, I'd be pretty confident that a well set up 325 would keep up with that :thumb:

Rofl..none are big power...well all are more potent than my 140bhp mx5 when it was 'stock' :lol:

however after watching/following NickD around Brands Indy in his relatively stock MK2 mx5 (he had 16s with cut slicks), I can definitely say that for a small technical circuit a well driven 5 is a sight to behold. He even got a Porsche carrera 4 to move over for him!! :lol:

Anyhow I think having some mid engined beastie should be a good fun track toy and be able to teach you about lines and braking, so my vote goes with the MR2

I have gone down the same lines as you Geoff...........until you run a 500+ bhp car on track/drag and road I don't think it prepares you for the up keep on the old cash front

Trev and I opted for the mkiii Supra and are very happy with it on track and with a little outlay (compared to a gtr etc) it will be a very competent track beast. All we have done/are doing to the Sup is a strip out inside, de-cat and filter,lowering springs,rollcage and buckets. The decat and filter were about

Why was the decat and filter so much money? springs sound like a bargain in comparison though

These are still "naughty quick" when well setup around the northloop.

interesting.

i have found a very cheap '93 GT fwd locally in need of some mot work including a clutch.

with the question about some sort of drifting comp going's on, i thought about a cheap 325 beemer.

i also found a rover 220 GTi. its a nasp 2 litre but my engine will go straight in.

Trev got the exhaust and filter new and the rest we have picked up on the boards or from friends second hand. The seats will turn up soon enough second hand and the chap at work will 'make' them fit

The single biggest factor in running the supra is my mindset.........I have seen you at Snetterton in your GTT and you don't hang about :twisted: but imagine not worrying too much about flying off track and damaging your pride and joy. When Trev and I have scenic detours we just laugh straight away, before we have even come to a stop!!!!!! I love taking my 32 on track but I am always paranoid about wrecking it.

We did think about an old 205 1.9 gti but RWD won the day :twisted:
