Increasing capacity

Post by Stuart »

Ok, time for a silly question

If you increase the capacity of your engine without changing anything else apart from a remap, would you see any significant changes? I understand that displacement can have an affect on torque but by how much?
My current engine capacity is 2.6 litres (or just under) so would stroking the engine to 2.7 be worth it? Would going to 2.8/2.9 etc make much difference and how would it change?

In theory you are getting about 4% extra air/fuel in there and would assume that you would get that kind of performance increase across the whole range. However, i have read somewhere that this isnt the case - will try and find that today for you.

You would see a benefit.

For starters you would get fractionally better spool up, leading to better torque (as well as more torque from the displacement increase) and therefore generally better figures. Depending on the turbos you would see more outright power unless maxxing the compressor housing bigtime as you will generally be flowing more air everywhere throughout the rev range - so at the same boost level you should be getting physically more air into the engine.

The 2.7kit was always considered handy as it fndamentally kepot the 2.6 reviness. The 2.8kits often get described as "torque" and I dont know anything about 2.9 (is that Apexi's kit ??).

Without having really driven any in anger I couldnt comment on whether the gains are that amazing in real life, or whether its more of a bonus whilst getting stronger internals which is the main point for me of getting a stroker for a skyline.

There a thread on stroker kits at the moment too !!

2.9 was Apexi, yeah :thumb:

Better spool up can't be bad but I think I'd need better/bigger turbos on first to take any sort of advantages........forged bottom end has got to be good though.

Thanks all.

Stu there is, as they say no substitute for CCs.

A good example is between my car and a friends mini, mine is 1293cc his is 1379cc.

the difference in his in spool up (as we have the same sort of turbos) is unbelievable, in fact I'd say his feels the same as mine when I'm using the gas as an anti lag!

The other point is that pound for pound he is around 20 bhp up on my figures if we run the same psi, thankfully he can't run as much as me lol.
