Anyone got a guide to setting up Coilovers

Post by RX7 »

Guys,

Just out of interest, anyone able to write how to setup coilovers or got a good guide from another site ?

Might be beneficial to a few others besides me.

Cheers,
Gareth

Clive put up quite a detailed thread on MRC but that was fairly specific for the Tein Flex as it explains setting up the pre-load.

Tomorrow I'll scan the pages from my Tein manual - don't expect a lot of info though!

Basically, to answer your questions from the other post, the damping adjustment clicker on the top of each unit will only go so far in each direction, and they will be damaged if you turn them too far. Yours look second hand, so I'd hope they were adjusted equally for left and right hand sides of the car.

As for height adjustment, measure from the top of the wheel arch to the centre cap of the wheel when on a nice flat surface. To adjust them you have to undo the ring at the base of the threaded section and then the very bottom section of the unit can be screwed up or down.

Cheers,
Alex

Cheers for the info Alex, is it clockwise or anticlockwise to soften ?

Yeah they are secondhand, but a lot lot cheaper than new and by the look of them they arent old.

when i fit them i do the following.

to set preload.
tighten till the spring has just started to compress, then wind in about 2.5 turns.

to set ride height.
measure ride height your currently used to or standard ride height at a point at each corner.
then fit coilovers and set ride height to what you want but keep the level as with what was previous.

to set adjustable damping.
for drag, soft as you can at the rear and hard as you can at the front (for rwd, gtr)
for track, 2 from hardest at rear and 5 from hardest at front.

pretty random really but there's probably some clues in there

do they not have plus and minus arrows next to the adjuster? can you ask the person you bought them from or a Buddy Club dealer for info?

To be honest mate I have only had a quick look at one..gonna have a good look at them tomorrow and do some research on the net about fitting them.

Good idea, I will mail srb-power (buddyclub stockists) and see if they can send me the instructions or point me in the direction of some.
