Any tips on taking a GTR box off?

Post by 323ian »

Am putting a new HKS twin plate in my GTR very soon and was just wondering if anyone has taken a Skyline GTR gearbox off and would share any tips with me to make life easier for me.
I have taken a fair few gearboxes off before but was wondering if there was any tricks of the trade with this one?
Cheers.

i've done it before, the worst thing was the two top bellhouse bolts and realigning and refitting the box/input shaft.
When i did it i undid the gearbox mount etc so that the box and engine pivoted back on the engine mounts which made it easier to get to.

Must say if i ever needed to do it again i'd take the engine and box out in one lump.

If you take the heater hoses off from the bulk head the top starter bolt can be reached from the top.Use a long extension and UJ to do the top gearbox bolts. You will need a dummy input shaft to centre a Twin plate clutch.I have done my R32GTR gearbox twice on my own so it cant be that hard.

Thanks very much for the advice.
Taking the engine out with the box :o that seems a bit extreme (famous last words)!!
Great advice about getting to the top bellhousing bolts from the top, definitely seems easier.
A clutch aligning tool can be used as your dummy input shaft can it not?
Cheers.

All I can say is Abbey had mine out - replaced the clutch - and refitted in about 4 hours .... and that was with the engine in .... but sorry to say I didn't watch :)

No the splines have to be matched in both plates or the gearbox will not go in. You remove the top starter bolt with the rear mount on the gearbox, then drop it down to do the top gearbox bolts with a socket and extension

Where did you get a dummy shaft from and would it be possible to borrow it?

What fluid goes in the pot in the boot as im sure the pipe which connects to the back of the box will need bleeding through once i put it back on again?

Yes just drop me a PM when you need it. You can use PAS fluid to top up the ATTESA fluid, but I have noticed from standard they have another type of oil?
