As seems to be the format recently, Dunk mentioned that he wanted to get the car checked after his mapping session with Zak @ Mocom Racing. Dunk was sure that the remap was a good deal stronger through the revs, but figures are figures. Anyway this was Friday when we got chatting and next thing I know we're both booked in at Clive Atthowes for a power run. I'd never been there before after having tried Engine Advantages and SCA (don't laugh) with the GTR before in different specs. EA tend to be accurate, SCA tend to be generous and apparently CA tends to be inline with EA. At least conservative figures gave us both something sensible to build on.
After 40 minutes of prep, teeth sucking and warnings about piston failure Dunks Sti was wheeled on and wound up in anger. A few adjustments later and the figures were there in black and white. When Dunk was winding me up, goading me into doubting my mighty RB engine, he had mentioned that he wanted to acheive a combined figure across torque and BHP figures of 650. Pretty good for a largely stock 2.5 that leaves the factory with 280BHP. I hope Dunk doesn't mind me spilling the beans, but he produced 333bhp and 352 lb torque
, therefore a combined figure of 685!! The thing that struck me was how easy it was. And the STi looked like it could do it all day long. Very impressive.After that run and those figures the whole idea of calling the site Bigpower and insisting that all members put up or shut up regarding claims of power or quarter mile times, were racing through my mind. Would my car do the 'business'? Would rear wheel drive be an issue? Would Dunk hand me my ass and the site have to be renamed Moderatepower.co.uk? They brought the car in a little concerned that my R32 would trip the rollers in 2wd. Dunk had obviously been bigging me up beyond my wildest chances........cheers pal
With the car loaded on in 2wd and traction a real issue after two runs, the best figures were 333BHP. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I couldn't lose like this, that was less than the last figures with less boost and the old paper turbos! We had a quick conflab and the technician reckoned that the delivery of full boost was causing real problems and traction was being lost. Judging by how easy the car looked like it was revving out, I had to agree. A quick fuse change later and the 4WD playing field was levelled. After one run to initialize 'things' the dude behind the wheel worked his way through the gears to fourth and then floored it. When he started slowing the car up, he slowly nodded is head and mouthed the words 'that was a lot better' to his associate. Basically the car had acheived 413bhp and 331 lb of torque. Lovely. Plenty of fuel left, so it's nice and safe. Made rather a nice noise on there as well We all shook hands and made our way back to Attleborough. On the road the performance was very similar. Dunks higher torque and shorter gearing made sure that our pace was very evenly matched. I can only imagine that the Sti will take some following around the NS next month. I can't wait to find out.
