IT experts .........where are you??

I'm one of these people that suffer from learning difficulties. I have difficulty learning how to network PC's, especially wirelessly.
Scenario~
I have a laptop with a wireless adaptor and this is 'connected' to a wireless router. I would like to add another Desktop to this network with it's wireless PC card. How the F**K do I get them to 'see' each other? The message I get when I try and use the windows wizard is that it cannot set it up and refers me to an unbelievably dull article (871122) on microsofts site. Now, I'd much prefer to have a beer and relax, but this networking malarkey is spoiling my mood. Any ideas?

Here we go......

First question, have you tried the laptop in the same location ?

What are you connecting to ? A wireless router ?

The wireless card you have, will it do both Wireless A/B and G ?

In your Network Connections options (found in control panel). Do you have an icon for wireless network connection ?

If so, it will probably say not connected. Is this right ?

If it says disabled then right click and choose enable.

Next step, right click the icon and choose properties, then go to tcp/ip and make sure everything is set to automatic, ok this and ok again and then go back into the icon again by right clicking and choosing properties.

There should be a tab along the top saying 'Wireless Networks', choose this and make sure the setting 'Use windows to configure my wireless network settings' is ticked, then there should be a box underneath saying 'view wireless networks' If you click on that another window should come up asking you to choose your network, is yours there ?

If not go back to the previous window and there is a box saying advanced, click this and then make sure 'any available network' is selected.

Try these and post up what happens.

With the laptop did that just automatically connect ?

The wizard gets as far as saying
' windows could not finish repairing the problem because....
connecting to the wireless network'
i changed the settings as you described

The laptop pretty much set itself up

Is this a new wireless card or an old thing thats been used to prop doors open etc ?

Is it Win XP too ?

When does the wizard run ? Is it after you click the 'view wireless networks' ?

Did yo utry what microsoft said :
1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click Network Connections.
3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then click Change settings of this connection.
4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.

Also people on the site say you have to reboot after doing the above.

This is what pisses me off with PC's
I followed Gareths/microsofts instructions verbatim, and nothing!
Is it possible that the wireless card in the PC is switched off?

By checking the above and when you see the icon if its switched off it will say 'disabled'.

What about re-installing the driver software again ?

Anpther option is to run the 'network setup wizard' first before doing the wireless one. Have found this sometimes fixes a lot of issues.

Do you know what type of router and wireless card you have ?

bt router (voyager)
wireless card in desktop is a belkin

the text indicates that it's enabled

i will try re-installing the software. thanks
