this appears to have been solved now (unless anyone tells me otherwise)

The last changes to the cookie settings seem to have done the trick.

Ok ... but i'm now having issues with Firefox - but am ok with IE...

i am having issues with firefox generally at the moment with it crashing etc every hour... but nothing to do with the site - just too many windows open and moving them between screens.
