TD05 20G Lag......

Post by ScoobieWRX »

Anyone have experience with these. Seems to be very laggy. Not coming on song till 5K-5.5K rpm at the moment.

Only just put it on and it definately needs the wastegate adjusting and a remap etc..., not able to do that now till i've changed the gearbox so i can do proper runs but just out of interest when are they suppose to kick in, usual characteristics. It's bolted on a 2.0L, topmount IC.

Edited to add: I've got the GT Spec GenII headers and 3bolt uppipe.....will changing these back to a set of standard but ported headers and uppipe to speed up gas velocity make a huge difference to spool up or am i as well to stick with the GT headers. Any thoughts form those that know would be good.

Cheers :D

Source may have a bearing, if it's non-Andy F but don't know for sure. there are some cheap Chinese or Taiwanese on ebay that are reported to be crap.

I had an Andy F one on my 2.5 when it was first converted with Apexi ECU, Grouppe-S headers and AVC-R. No problem with spool up and was on song by 3K. I'd imagine 3.5K on a 2.0L are you sure the wastegate is closing fully? If it has the flimsy sheet metal bracket, they can bend and prevent full closure. Give it a forceful tweak with a large adjustable spanner to be safe.

Good luck.

The bracket on it is pretty thick and solid. I'm pretty sure the wastegate needs some big adjustment via the adjustable rod as it's never been used and very probably needs setting up properly...it's brand spanking new!!

I have to say though...the spring in the actuator doesn't feel quite as trong as the one in my old VF35 that took a fair bit of strength by hand to open the wastegate where as this one doesn't need so much.

I'll have to play around with to see what's happening.

Cheers Gerry.

If it has a strong bracket on the wastegate it probably isn't an Andy F build :)

I recently fitted a Zen 20G to my 2.0l wrx and the spool up was woeful and i mean laggy as hell. Fortunately (or not) i fooked that engine fairly quickly and replaced it with an 04 STI lump/ECU. Coupled with the AVCS and a supreme map from Dunk the power is now coming in much lower in the range and is holding boost to the redline. It's still a mile away from the AF04 Hybrid i had before, That was spoolsville city. Almost no lag at all, But dropped off boost way too early.

Having read up today some more on these what Gerry say's sounds about right with respect to spoolup etc... the std headers i've got in the garage with a standard uppipe both ported will promote earlier/quicker spool up as the GT Spec Gen II headers i've got on at the moment have a much larger ID on the pipework therefore slower velocity gases and not as good for spool.

I really want good midrange to top end, not so bothered about super early spoolup but the way this turbo is set up at the moment spoolup is super slow so i'll just have to have a play in the week. At the moment once it does kick in it boosts really strong compared to my VF35 and pulls like a train all the way to the redline and well beyond if i raise the limiter i've no doubt.

Eureka moment!! :D I've just thought of something else too.....i had to put a couple of spacers on the actuator bracket to stop the actuator case hitting the injector bracket/bar that bolts onto the block. I think that's what is causing the issue, and as Gerry said....is the wategate fully closing....right now i think not!!

Looks like i'll have to get the grinder out or adjust the wastegate rod right up....If i adjust the wastegate rod and it cures the issue i'll set it back to where it was and do some grinding. I love it when a plan comes together!! :D

a properly mapped decent 20g should be spooling by around 3500 on a 2.0 and more like 2600+ or so on a 2.5..........

be careful as some of the "copy" one are very badly made and have woeful spool.......

I've sorted the issues i had and it's working well now. Ported the wastegate out a bit too so it shouldn't suffer from any of the boost spiking issues i keep reading about. I've left cold side alone for now. Spooling around 3700-4000 at the mo on the old map but i've got to change wastegate duty and boost maps for starters as well as everything else to suit. I'll have it spooling between between 3000-3500 by the time i've finished. I won't map it till i've sorted the gearbox out (no 3rd gear), i'll report back then.

Just a quick update......

Installed a gearbox with the help of Mr. Gerry H!!

Finally got around to doing some mapping just the other day and i've got it spooling from about 3500-3600rpm in 4th and 5th. Doesn't spool properly till around 3800-3900 in 2nd and 3rd. Only set up at low boost currently peaking at around 1.25bar but pulls that very nicely to the red line. I dare say it will hold a fair bit more boost to the red line but not neccessary just now. I'm working on Ignition Timing, AFR's and AVCS currently. Tuning the AVCS has helped as well as adding some more timing and leaning out AFR's just a little bit more, all without knock so far but there's more to be had on good old 99RON.

I think i need to get some ducting set up to force air into the inner wing cavity. I think this might help with improving spooling in gears 1-3 not that air flow is particularly restricted but every little bit helps. I'm trundling up and down the motorway a fair bit now so the way the turbo spools in 4th and 5th is perfect for overtaking from 3500rpm.

I'm very pleased with the TD05 20G so far although i think the fact that it has a standard size air inlet may be adding to the lag. I'll try a hybrid in the new year with a 76mm inlet or just get a compressor housing to fit the bill. The turbo is brand new and has had bugger all use so rather than buy a new turbo modifying this one may be the way forward.
