CSL is still with me, i test drove a GT2 and i liked it but got back into the CSL and it felt right.

So i'm now in a bit of a dilemma, i'm thinking of keeping the CSL till atleast next summer but upgrading the suspension and maybe getting a new wrap. Really want some BBS LM's but am trying to resist lol.

Starting to like the look of the 997 Turbo aswell...

I haven't done a track day since Spa at the end of May... been soo busy at work.

Should be back in UK around December time so will bell you for a catch up. you still on same number?

All of this 'sell the Golf' stuff stems from boredom. In many ways the car is just what I want. Sure there are a couple of niggles, but when you've come out of a race prepared M3 or 450 odd horse power GTR, there were bound to be difficult comparisons :)

Essentially it's cheap to run with low insurance and fuel costs. It's fun to drive as the handling is like something off of Mario Kart, the braking is just rude and the grip levels make you laugh. I like the looks and there is no knocking the fact that it's a good example with a decent specification, thanks partly to my wallet and partly to huge parts availability.

Downsides include no stereo so you have to listen to the engine (boo) and the fact that the starting from cold is a bit hit and miss. The refinement of a more modern car, from its smooth running and predictable nature, would be most appreciated.

So, what to do? I have considered putting in another engine. A more modern two litre or even the 2.9 from the VR6 are both options. So is a forced induction 1.8 turbo, which guarantees big increases in refinement and power. And bills :)

Another option is selling up (hence the ad) and buying something stupid. Stupid because it could be rear wheel drive. Stupid because it could be V8 or turbo'd. Stupid because it would inevitably end in tears when bills expand and fun for pounds diminish.

I have had a few people sniffing around the car, two test drives and one offer of a part ex (You can stick a Nissan Primera GT right up your arse ;) )

I could break it..........na!! Been there too many times in recent years, I can't do that again.

So, gents. What would you do?

I have spoken to a couple of thoroughly nice lads about putting a two litre 16v in, which will boost power a bit and refinement a lot. Bearing in mind I have actually spent far more on this car than I ever wanted to ("It's going to stay standard") spending another

i would keep it ,an appreciating classic in years to come if not now, just save up a few quid to buy something else, after all we can all find money to upgrade parts etc so just stick a few quid in a tin every so often and you will be surprised how it adds up .How many times have any of us said i wish i hadn't sold that car ;)

I tend to agree, IF you have somewhere to store the Golf without it rotting to bits.
Problem is, closed season is upon us soon, and you'll get bored with the Golf as a road car, as it's noisy, will mist up, and could be a bit much.
The car we spoke about might be nice to tool about in over the winter months, and you'd sell it for similar money next year (If you could scrape the funds together without selling the Golf)

Having Snetterton as your local track doesn't suit owning a Golf as it is more of a power circuit. When you go to cadwell you'll really enjoy the golf as you would at places like Oulton park and Donnington. Without plenty of dosh you will have to compromise either road or track.

If you do a fair number of road miles each week then comfort and refinement are a must (we're not teenagers anymore). But this will have a knock on for the track car as will take funds away from that.

I would try and get out to other tracks especially now that Donny is back and at least give the golf a chance as a track car.

In the mean time...
1. Fit a stereo
2. Fit some carpet (At least for the winter)
3. Sort out the cold starting niggle (It's cheaper than buying another car)

Then you'll find that your overall enjoyment of the car will increase.

Yeah I would have thought fitting a stereo was fairly easy Stu, didnt you used to have a business doing that ?

I know what you are going through and have been through it with the Rex, noisy check, smelly check, rough riding check, costly check. However something just brings me back to the car again and again. Although I bought the car for different reasons than you bought the Golf.

I think you really need to think about what you are going to do with your life, from our chats recently it seemed like your priorities had changed. You need to think about what you are going to be doing in the next year or 2 years and I think that will decide whether you need to sell or keep the Golf.

If it were me though and I know this is different to what the others have said, in your situation and with the travelling possibly coming up then I would flog it and save for something I really wanted. Yes it will mean a break from cars but think you will come back refreshed.

Interesting guys. Thanks :)

(Gareth, I used to own a business selling the stuff and my partner fitted it all. I know the fitting is easy enough but the wiring has been cut around, so it's a little more complicated for a numpty like me)
