Again how can it be so dangerous - is it the road surface?, or just bad drivers - I noticed though that it is different parts of the tunnel.

I'm sure I read somewhere that tunnels freeze before ground in the open air, people come flying into the tunnel assuming the road conditions will be the same and get caught out, do the whole overcorrection thing and hit the wall.

Of course I could just be talking rubbish :D
