Summertime vermin shooting....

Post by jap.slapper »

Recently rats have taken an interest in our neighbours chicken coup and having spotted a few sneaking around the outskirts of our property I figured it was time I popped up to Hereford to buy myself a new toy

It's a lot smaller than I'm used to but for whacking vermin at 50yds+ it is ideal, it's a suppressed BSA Ultra SE .22 Cal (10 round multi-shot)

Image

I've spent a few hours zeroing it and collecting data at various ranges and angles and am happy to report that with the 4-12 x 50 scope fitted a first round head shot at 50yds is a piece of piss (and if on the odd occasion the first round doesn't do the job then there are of course another 9 rounds in the mag to fall back on) and with the new moderator fitted it barely makes a sound

The scope reticules are illuminated at the turn of a switch for night shooting but I'm also going to have a play around with a couple of my night vision/TI scopes to see if any of them are compatible, I think a bit of stalking over the next few evenings might be in order.

Clearly it's no .338 or .50 Cal but to be fair for what it is it has a good amount of punch, easily penetrating tennis balls at 50yds

This is one of the little feckers' that I'd been seeing on and off for a few weeks, it actually had a good feed off the rat traps without setting any of them off!!

So it would seem that he was a dab hand at defeating rat traps.....though not so good at avoiding axes

I also picked up a stock mounted bi-pod that I still need to fit and a big dive bottle in order to keep re-charging it to its full 200psi

It's been a bit of a learning curve as my shooting position has had to be adapted due to having no vision in my right eye, however as there are no cases to eject and with it having zero recoil it's actually pretty easy to fire left handed. It's also quite a forgiving stock that gives enough leeway to enable me (if I need to) to tilt my head all the way over and fire right handed but using my left eye

I'm not planning on digging out my ghillie suit just yet but these little sods are certainly in for a bit of 'Berenger' justice :sifone:

Yep but then I figured Claymores and Bar mines might be a bit overkill, so for the little'ens I just went conventional instead

the thing with this one ^^^^ I set this trap yesterday afternoon and baited it with a bit of Snickers, Mickey here obviously fancied a bit.....the thing is there's no way that he could have munched it before he got whacked so clearly they must have been working in pairs. His battle buddy must have decided that as his mucker had paid the price trying to get to his tasty morsel (and failed miserably) then it would be rude to waste it and opted to go all out Indiana Jones, dodge any potential pit falls and successfully managed to munch what was left

so I reset it this afternoon and threw a secondary in there for good measure

After a bit more fun shooting this afternoon with the rifle I decided to do a bit of CQB in the woods with my CO2 Walther, you never lose it :sifone:

I picked this up in the US several years ago and left it in one of the caravans with the rest of my kit

after retrieving the caravan and parking it up at our place I found it again, as before it's taken a bit of adapting to but I can now whack things (tennis balls and tin cans) at close range :hurray:

Next stop CO2 M4/C8 :patriot:

I once made the mistake of saying on a yank forum that gun owning was i bit creepy and needless to say i got hammered ,even by the ladies on the site . I wouldn't mind getting a bb gun as there are loads of pigeons were i live but i have neighbours who don't see them as pests . I did try and train our dogs to chase them but one is too old and grumpy to do anything and the other is too daft as it would rather chase bees . Pete

In my opinion firearms certainly have their place in this world (good, bad or indifferent) and I for one am of the opinion that teaching the next generation to have a healthy respect for firearms is quite important. I believe that by giving youth controlled exposure from qualified instructors at a young age and helping them to understand how dangerous they can be if mishandled you potentially reduce the chances of an inquisitive/naïve based accident further on down the line.

Don't get me wrong I think the US has a serious problem on their hands with a large percentage abiding by the same mentality of "I keep my .50 Cal Barrett behind the front door for home security purposes" which lets be honest is pretty f**ked up.

The US also have this fixation with an 'inevitable' zombie apocalypse, which it's not my place to comment on that however to be fair it can be argued that in recent times (Rwanda, Sierra Leone etc.) we've actually witnessed what is in effect pretty close to the Holywood hyped zombie fest....so maybe the US know their own potential better than I do

I personally find it very relaxing, especially shooting at much longer ranges

Must admit there attitude to guns did freak me out a bit and everything is seen as a threat and a viable target , its a cultural thing and us in europe don't quite understand it , for me i just like some of the cars . Nice rat you bagged there i cornered one at work i while back a tried to brain it with a spade but i ended up hitting everthing else apart from the rat , i recon i put the fear of god into it though .

I was informed today that apparently the gestation period for rats and mice is around 20-23 days, which surprised me if I'm honest but kind of makes you appreciate that you have to keep on top of them or you run the risk of being infested in next to no time

Thats the spirit.....filthy feckin things....They get everywhere.....last year I pulled up a false floor in one of the Aviva offices to run some cables to be confronted by piles of rat shit and piss under the floor and chewed cables.
The moves people wanted the work to be completed they were told quite firmly by me to feck off until it was bated and cleaned up......
And yes your quite right about the gestation period .....mice are even faster.
