Just interested, thinking of getting into this, always wanted to but funds have always held me back.
Wondering where is best to start, been looking at some local single venue rallies, was thiniking this could maybe be a good starting point???
Looking into costs etc if anyone has some info advice :?:
Anyone on here Rally??
I used to Logan - as a co-driver navigator across UK and overseas in Europe.
Local motor club is the best place to get the info. I used to belong to Crawley Motor Club and Central Sussex Car Club.
Single Venue events are a great starter and can either be tarmac (mostly) or a gravel type. Venues such as Millbrook proving ground and Chobham test track were the best.
You will need an MSA license of the correct category to rally.

Thanks for the response Duncan.
I am a member of Harrow CC, and yes, looked into the licience as well. Just wondering what car/spec would be a good starting point etc, do you need multiple amounts of tyres etc.
I am sure the single venue rallies must keep the cost down fairly as the wear and tear must be a lot less than a all gravel stage rally.
PS I may need a decent navigator if i get into it

Tyres - a selection of part used tyres om rims would do it
Costs - depends on the event but not too bad really for the amount of track time you get.
Tarmac is a lot easier to spec for (aswell as being great fun) but expect to get pitted against some very serious equipment but certainly for the level your car is at it should do ok. you will need normal FIA stuff stuff as plumbed in extinguisher, electrical cut off switches, suits, harnesses etc but the blue book will give you the full spec - I wouldnt have thought you would need to do much tbh.
Most people do tend to trailer their cars there as most of the single venue cars are not road legal.
ps. I'd be well up for navigating for you

Interesting, can you rememeber the sort of entry costs per event Duncan??
I don't think I would be using my car, as its too good to rally I think, would look to get an already rally prepped car with the relevant log book etc
I need a National Rally B licience, which means taking a BARDS course, and the co-drivers can do it on National Non race B, the one you already have
I thought all rally cars had to be road legal, tax and tested?? I will have to have a read through the Blue Book when I get it back from Stu.

Thanks for that, will have a read later.....
Just at the stage of whether to sell my nice newly sprayed very good condition car and take the plunge and go rallying, ,or spend a bit extra on mine for next years Sprinting....hmmm
Going to try and do a days rally training next month or in December to see if I am any good :!: Thats the cheapest way to see how things go, in an ideal world I would like to keep mine and also buy a rally car, but thats not gonna happen as I am sure the girlfriend won't let me re-mortgage the house!!!

Hi Logan just spotted this thread.
Sounds like between yourself and Duncan, you've sorted out most of the info you need already! If there's anything I can help with, do drop me a line.
Harrow Car Club membership will be sufficient for eligibility (with appropriate comp lic), as long as any one of the usual four regional associations are invited (AEMC, ACSMC, ASEMC or LCAMC) to the event.
Harrow CC had a big rallying scene in the 60's and 70's (when events used to take place on public roads and the rules were a little slacker than they are today!), but has really switched back to being (primarily) a circuit racing / speed event club these days, so we don't have so many people to call on.
I think the last member to do any serious rallying was Mick Bentley, who had a very nicely prepped Escort Mk2. He switched around five years ago to circuit racing, but I can try and put you in touch if you're interested, although I'm not sure how up to date his info would be. It's a shame you weren't at the sprint, the London Irish Motor Club were down in force, they are primarily a rallying club, loads of opportunities for questions there!

Thanks for the reply
Yeh, will have a nosey around the London irish website, and I think, really, the best thing to do is to get down to watch one and I can speak to the people taking part in the event, and see what their advice is.
Just been having a look at rally cars for sale, and there are a few about, but what the best to start, stay 4wd, and get a clubman/Group N Impreza, go for a 2wd super 1600 spec.....to many things to research, i suppose there is no rush, i can always take another year, sprinting next year, and see.....
If you can keep it shiny side up
It almost seems that these single venue rallies are better value than Sprinting, just a few more regs to deal with etc No doubt as I delve deeper into it there will be some other major costs I have missed :!:
