This is the second time 3rd gear has snapped a tooth off the laygear, nothing wrong with 3rd gear to make this happen as it was replaced last time with new.

do you think I could help it from braking off by grinding a small radius on around where the teeth are machined, as there is a sharp edge there at the base of the tooth. They say it works on cranks so thought about this??

Here are the teeth in more detail,

I've have roughly arrowed where i thought a radius might work.

That's bad luck Matt - do they not make them with the radius already in place :D

Maybe bead blasting would help, this would radius all the sharp edges, then maybe some nitriding to restore the hardness....or whatever its called now :?

I'll be showing my age if I told you...they are long gone anyway, Reynolds and Hostler, they were in Norwich...I can make some enquiries Tuesday...I'm sure someone else may have some suggestions....

Would the Cryo treatment bring them back to the same hardness as they were originally or slightly softer....

Was it too brittle?
