With the other bits you've done, it explains why the Tomcat is a quick car. How durable do you find the engine in this spec mate? What kind of maintenance do you face over and above one that runs closer to 200bhp and what was the domino effect of tuning it to 300+? (i.e did you need a better diff, gearbox, clutch)

Engine is pretty strong as std -only the pistons are the weak link
larger turbo, intercooler and better flowed head, manifolds etc allows it to run approx 50-60bhp above what it would run at the same boost with std setup.
also at 14psi the turbos hardly working and the charge is nice and cool so theirs little extra strain on the engine/cooling.
Have added arp studs as head gaskets can leak under high boost -since fitting later klinger gasket never had one fail.
Uses oil on track
I only occasionally use high boost as I think the engine life would suffer with continuous use.

Touch wood this engines been in around 6 years -only had had it a part for checking, new big ends and lapping in in valves and new seals and gaskets.

engine mounts std are a bit weak so have solid rubber on mine and also poly bushes tie rods are essential.

oil -only use fully sythetic and run larger front mount cooler only change once a year.

gearbox is strong -but std 220 diff isn't, neither are the plastic cased bearings
when in good condition easy fix with steel case bearings and later 620ti in mine or quaife diff if you have the money.
since not failed in approx 5 years
clutch -needs changing to paddle centre or it slips above 240bhp

driveshafts and cv joints wear on track but only had to change once since had car
drive shaft gaiters suffers and usually need replacing every few years

brakes on std car are very poor so are essential to upgrade.
on mine ap discs and pads -pads last 1-2 track days discs a few years.

rubber bushes on std cars also are best changed to poly -more down to age.

back on the road

Post by tomcat »

Good to finally have it back on the road after the winter 4 months of the road.
Fixed my smashed front spoiler Id ripped off on the last track day and replaced the front cracked bumper
Also have done a few other bits of paintwork etc.
Added mgf mirror (interior lights) and oil pressure gauge.

Gave it some beans as Id forgotten what a fast car was like

Yes car is looking loads better with the black and white.

You fancy doing Snetterton on the 10th June?

Looks nice Scott, well done. I liked the white wheels (it's the Essex in me) and also liked the orange too, but this does look clean and very well presented

There's not many 19 year old Rover race cars that you can say that about!
