I would've put it down to that Gerry, but this was the same millers oil Eddy put in when the clutch was changed about a month ago. :/

Is there any particular Subaru driver you're talking about? ;)

But if it had a change of oil a month ago why was it particle free yet dirty? A bit odd or was it just a top-up when the clutch was done?

Not thinking of any particular Subaru driver, but it's a recognised fix attempt before fighting with a g/box.

nooo Gerry, when i say the oil's dark i dont mean it's the knackered dark. it's the normal colour, just doesnt have a silver tint from anything metallic floating in it. :)

So the oil was 'as new'?

Are you 100% the noise was from the box? What were the symptoms? Maybe someone will have an idea of what it could be.

pretty much yeah :) sorry i shouldve been a bit more clearer on that.

Yes the noise is definatey the box. the engine revs freely at a standstill with no noise. the gearbox only made that noise on decelleration and idle, on accelleration it goes away completely. :/ and its not the cv joints either.

Standstill in neutral or in gear with foot on clutch?

Have you checked the diff oil?

Idle at standstill? or rolling idle in neutral.

Worse in some gears?

What's the noise like in top?

Any cornering noises? If so, de/accelerating rolling on feathered throttle/neutral?

Did the noise go away with your foot on the clutch?

standstill in neutral with foot off

havent checked because i assume that it shares the same oil as the gearbox

standstill idle and rolling idle

same sound in all gears on decelleration

very noisey at high rpm decelleration

no abnormal cornering noise

Isn't this a RWD? If so, diff will be between rear wheels. It's not always obvious where noises come from as they do travel.
