Yeah, i am pretty gutted atm. I have been driving like miss daisy since the Snetterton Charity day too so I think it must be a delayed reaction. All gears are selecting but it sounds like a bag of bolts rattling around in the box!
TY754VN6AA is the gearbox code, one on ebay and imprezabreakers are taking a look for me too.
I am prepared to do the job on my drive, but I am not looking forward to it in this weather
Seriously considering a 6sp conversion - here we go again..... lmfao

Personally i'd aviod like the plague another "chocolate" 5 speed, I managed to destroy six of them including 2 built API ones. 6 speed conversions are cheap now, theres usually a few on Scoobynet for circa 1.5K.
Just in case you wondered what yours may look like inside...

Thanks for that Jon, I will compare pics when I rip my box apart! Have you (or did you) go 6sp with good results? What power out of interest?
I have bit the bullet and committed to a UK '03 6sp conversion kit which I will be collecting on Saturday. I have tomorrow booked off work and will be on my back on the drive pulling the 5sp out in freezing wind

Tony thats the best way to go 6 speed the thing with the 5 speed is it will take up to about 340 hp but they don't like paddle clutchs as the up take is to snappy.
But what you will notice with the six speed is how heavy it is make sure you have a few helpers to fit it.
Quite a slow day today with the weather, I did not get on the car until 10am and there was ice on it until 3pm! All went to plan with the exception of not being able to drain the gearbox oil as it required a T70 Torx which I do not have, I will have to pick up for Saturday. Pretty much everything else is done and the box is ready to come out.
Collection of the 6sp is set for Saturday morning, so fingers crossed the rest of the weekend goes smoothly.

Yup, went for a JDM 6spd (lower ratios) and haven't looked back. That said i've managed to fuck that box as well (no mechanical sympathy at all). Good luck in fitting it by yourself, those boxes are very very heavy! Once you line it up on the dowels you're home and dry, apart from that it's a PITA!
Got a T70 torx bit, and the plug was so tight in the box it shattered the bit trying to free it! Drilled a hole through the plug! That'll show it haha
Got the box off Sat afternoon after collecting the 6sp in the morning. Had to employ some tricky leveraging techniques to get the box to split from the block, they really did not want to come apart. Then to find the clutch friction plate pretty worn, beyond what I was prepared to put back in. Found stock of Exedy Pink box clutch kit in Chesterfield, 30 mins before they shut, and got on the phone to my Bro (in Sheffield) to collect for me. Midnight I was back home with a clutch kit in the boot.
Today got the new box today on without too much of an issue and reassembled the car. Need to get 6sp gaiter, new gear knob, a couple of split pins for the front bottom ball(ache) joints, and few new jubilee clips for the IC pipework.
Phew, pretty happy now. New box had sharp changes, much improved ratios, 6th gear is a little clunky going in, and the cluch pedal is much lighter than expected.
