Diagnose this

-Gearbox whine at all times, but under load rather than off throttle. This has been constant and Dom tells me it was a feature of the car from day one
-Absolutely no slipping that I can feel regardless of revs or gear however.....
-After a brisk drive

the clutch judders when pulling away in first but this seems to go away when it has cooled down.
-The gear change is heavy and stiff going into first gear. This may be coincidental but I felt it was worth mentioning it.
-Oil for gearbox is brimmed and clean (as in very clean)

Sorry if this repeats the advice that I have sought from Russ via PM but I felt I hadn't provided all of the surrounding details

I should add that I am not worried as such but if it all points to a clutch/gear box and diff change then I had better start planning ahead

They are known for juddering clutches. Usually.a couple of launches solves it. As for gearbox/diff whine, could be a few things.

Even though oil is clean it might be worth changing if you don't have any idea when it was last done.

Usually, the Subaru diff is very solid. Don't really hear about too many problems on those, newage cars anyway.

My 2002 gearbox whined, then one day at 360ftlb 3rd gear died after a good couple of years abuse. The 2005 gearbox i fitted doesn't whine at all so i would presume if the car was still on the road i would expect it to hold out better, and for longer.

My WRX had a juddery clutch, pretty typical across the board. Hotspots on the flywheel and clutch plate are generally to blame. A good hard launch will sort it for a while but usually comes back with town driving, or when the clutch gets hot from sitting around in endless traffic jams.

I use Redline Heavy ShockProof gearbox oil, no good if you have an LSD though so WRX's only. It certainly quietened my old gearbox down bigtime, it didn't whine as much as using ordinary oil, and i'm certain the heavy shockproof was responsible for keeping it going for as long as it did. I use it in the new gearbox as well.

I like that. But I prefer, thrash it and then break it for parts

I will go and drive it a bit harder to see if that kills or cures the judder. If it kills it, keep an eye out for a plethora of Impreza parts

As said above they do judder a bit, and my '95 had a slightly whiney 5th (or was it 4th?) which never got any worse.

If you're anywhere near Linton you're welcome to have a spin in mine ... or if you have anywhere local to you for 4W alignment I could pop over (next weekend busy but following one ok)
