Can you guess what it is yet?

Post by Stuart »

After a couple of trips out in the scorching heat, and roasting as a by-product, I decided to strip down the passenger door; the one with the non-working electric window. I stripped the door card, traced the wires, checked the loom into the door and that's where it all went Pete Tong!!

I couldn't find the wires once it had got as far as the dash, so I thought I'd take the dash out. What a mission.........still not done it after about an hour of removing screws, teasing things out rather than breaking them and still no sign of the wires!!

Anyone recognise these??

They are factory labelled '1' and '2' but I cannot see what they would normally plug into. However, '3', '4' and '5' all plug into fog lights, heated demister and the hazards respectively. Maybe there are options that can be selected from the factory on that bank of switches to the left of the wheel, and VW pre wire for them?

Lots to do in the coming days and weeks. Thankfully Mike is helping me on Saturday, so I'll be supervised at that point :)

Different plugs mate. I will try and butcher them on tomorrow if my Googling comes to nothing. Still trying to get the sodding dash out. None of the guides or web walkthroughs allow for you using No nails on it :D It would be nice to get the flocked (partially flocked) one in there before the weekend. It would probably help if I hadn't left it until it was dark.

I think it,s a ploy by all car makers to put in unused extra terminal blocks to piss off the entusiast, a word of caution though I connected a couple up when I replaced the heater matrix and they put the ecu in limp home mode.

Dash trauma

You know how one thing leads to another. Door cards stripped. Dash out (after fecking hours) and I was left with this
Image
Oops
I thought I would try to make the best of the situation, so I took the opportunity to grab the flocked dash and get it fitted. I must have had my eBay glasses on when I bought it, the same ones that landed the Jag. I got the dash out and in the cold light of day it was a disaster. Total crap. Going very cheap if anyone wants it!!

Plan B was another mint OE dash

Mint apart from a bloody great hole in it, after transporting it around I think.

So after all that, I had to put the original dash back in, albeit having repaired all of the dash vents. Whoop dee doo.

On a brighter note, the Comp's are now good to go. A little machining did wonders and now they look a little like this

I have managed to borrow an arch roller but I didn't want to risk anything on my own, so I hit with a hammer instead  I took Grace up the road for a quick test and apart from minimal rubbing on some pretty aggressively taken 90 degree corners, it was great. Mr B Motorsport will no doubt laugh and point tomorrow, but at least I stand a good chance of coming back to Norfolk with a very, very different car to the one that goes down there.

Preliminary reports from Mr B make the fitting of the coilovers, brake discs and pads, top mounts and seats an absolute doddle. I hope so, it would be really nice to have an easy day for once :)
