Rob .
Never heard of pulling a black wire from the fuse box to reset the ecu. Disconnect the battery overnight. Check for codes, there should be none. Run the car and watch the cel. check error for codes again.

It isn't easy trying to diagnose and fix problems remotely especially with limited info.

there is two black and two green wires under the drivers side of the dash, putting these together black to black and green to green gives ecu reset, just the blacks give fault codes using the engine check light

They're nothing to do with the fuse box.

Have you actually checked that doing this clears the fault codes from the ecu?

The ecu hangs on to fault codes until it's reset either by the method you said (although not always 100%) or by disconnecting the battery for a few hours.

You need to check that the codes have been cleared first, otherwise you could be looking at old codes and confusing the issue.

Not the green plugs. The black ones give the error code read out.

Disconnect the battery tonight and leave disconnected.

Re-connect battery tomorrow.

connect the two black connectors.

Switch on ignition and check that there's no error codes.

Switch off ignition and disconnect black connectors.

Start car and go for a run until you see a CEL or the problem shows.

Switch off ignition and connect black connectors.

Switch on ignition and check for error codes.

Come back and tell us what happened and we'll start again :D
