lol. i should be fine.
its just understanding what is involed in a service.
if what i do every month to my cars is a "service" then fine.
having had a go at fitting my own clutch too i just wondered what was involed with the vehicles i had in mind.
it could sway any decision i make towards car choice.
i just needed to understand also the concept of "major" and "minor" service items really.

Pulasars are bastards for clutches !!!
Evos arent much better !!
They're 4wd with lattitudinal engines and hence are swines !!!!
AYC needs doing every 4500miles on an Evo (with AYC) religiously.
I change oil more often than that anyway on the turbo cars.
You will most likely have a set of "performance" plugs and therefore will keep reusing them, they last a fairly long time anyway.
Clutch on our Evo4 has been fine for 4years although it never gets launched although it is probablly getting on for 300bhp.
You're best off with a specialist with most the cars you mention purely because a missed item that they would spot could cause an expensive repair later down the line. I reckon APT would be your best choice given where they are, failing that Bob at GBH but you'd spend an extra

thanks for the advise james
the GTR was always out of my budget tbh ( possibly even the EVO IV )
but it was the EVO III and 200sx which i'm more interested in so a cheap S14 or a well modded S13 will be on the cards it seems?
more so after watching you throw yours about last week
so have you got some advise on S13 ownership?
any idea of costs involved with an SR20 upgrade or even RB25 to an S13? or stick to the CA18?

I have a stock answer to that exact question about S13's,
DONT GET A UK ONE !!!
I know this tends to upset the SXOC diehards as they feel very protective over the CA18, and in some ways its a 4 cylinder RB and a very good design of motor. But in practice they just fail too much and are always weaker, less tuneable and generally 2nd place to SR20 in the real world. If you are set on the S13 bodystyle then that means a 180sx import like mine, if not then Im sure you can find a nice clean S14 in your budget from the UK. Pro's and con's of each would be that any Japanese import will have spent that many fewer years living in a salt infested swamp fest that we call our road network. Typically they have a few extra goodies on them, which whilst on "larger" items such as turbochargers and ecu's can be a bit of a double edged sword, certainly on simpler kit such as strut braces, suspension, links, gauges, rollcages and so on can add up to be a major saving on what it would cost to upgrade yourself from scratch over here.
Personally I wouldnt bother to SR or RB a UK S13 unless I wanted to have it purely for the fact it had the RB and was novel. For the ease of availability and supply a 180sx would do it for me everytime. Personally I prefer the hatchback shape to the coupe and like the skylines I prefer the early nineties and late nineties cars over the mid nineties ones every time. I love R34 and R32 in that order, and I love S15 and S13 in that order !!! I wouldnt get an S14 myself purely because I feel they are an inferior car, less useable weight distribution, the VVT version of the SR20 is more prone to problems and frankly the Redtop engines like mine have a reputation for being the best, although this is a long and never ending arguemnt. They certainly have a better plenum than the VVT ones as standard and I have no complaints about mine.
It depends on what you want to do with the car really mate.
For road and ultimate speed the Evo would be in a different league to the S-bodys. On outright track work it would be much closer and in my opinion down to persoanl preference rather than a performance advantage. Obviously for "fun" and naughtiness, as well as proper drift use then there is no choice but RWD !!!
Hope that helps mate.
If you do decide on an import then I can put you in touch with someone who will get you the best cars for the best price
