Is this sort of event OK for numpties like me though Paul? I fundamentally cannot drift at all but want practice. I don't want to spoil anyone elses day but would love to have a go at something like this..........any ideas?

You should be fine with that Stu 8)
Basically the things i used to get told off for were knocking down cones that mark the course as it holds everyone up whilst they're replaced.
Also it depends alittle on the setup of the day, they'll either let you out on track then wave a flag when your times up or give a set amount of laps (usually flag), just be sure to exit track asap when your times up.
Might be worth you doing a driftschool day just as a one of as their advice will help no end... saying that you ought to nag bladerider for some tuition.
tbh i feel quite out of practice at the moment, although i was out today on a bit of private land and was holding some nice big ovals and figure of eights.... can't beat a proper course though :-D

If Stu finds a nice piece of open tarmac then I'd be happy to give tips !! 
The Driftuk days are always good, depending on when it was I'd tag along anyways to catch up with the gang. I did enquire about this course yesterday and they told me they have two courses at once, one tighter than the other and that it would be around 2nd gear, maybe 3rd, which in my experience usually means you could easily do it in 2nd if you just kept your foot in. I wanted to practice 4th gear 100+ entries and setups and tyre choices/pressure so its not alot of use to me which is a bummer.

Very good day, relaxed and excellent value. All turns 2nd gear which suits the beema with its' open diff. Recommended!
