Strain the drained oil through a pair of tights or stockings, if that's your preference. If it's OK or looks like the box is screwed anyway. It'll cost you nothing.
At least you'll have an idea of imminent disaster if there's any bits of metal in the oil.

Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or hump it, piss on it and walk away!
What? The tights or stocking preference?
Forgot to say, if the box looks to be shagged or, if the oil's clean, you can re-use it. No need for fresh oil if it's going to be dumped soon anyway.
Of course, you could find that the noise is caused because there's no oil in it

Well that was interesting :/ today after draining the oil out i found no partacles, not even on the sump plug. The oil was dark with no silver tint, but what puzzles me further is this. Once filled back up and had a liberal drive, there's no crunch/grinding noise and it slides through every gear without fail.
Confused Dan is confused.
So the plan now is, drive the car about every chance i get for the rest of this week to see if it reoccurs with the odd safe liberal drive. If all's well then the urgency of another box can lower a bit whilst i put money aside each week to buy another one and have it fitted.

Perhaps the oil drained was way past its use by date and a decent quality replacement was all that was needed. Let's hope so.
It's not unknown for a change of oil to quieten or smooth a noisey/notchy box, ask any Subaru driver
